These May have been a system to track who was in the mine. Similar systems exist in old coal mines in the US. Take the notifier with you when you are in the mine, and management can easily see who is in the mine in the event of a collapse.

A miner would put his personal crap in these these little compartments before they went down and probably left there miner caps when they left. They had the kind of compartments in Spinghill Novie . Mott's, check out Springhill, Novie, has lots of possibilities for the master.
