Stalactites and Stalagmites

Stalactites and Stalagmites

Stalactites are the icicle-like formations on the ceiling, while stalagmites are the deposits on the floor. I presume they consist of calcium.

Ah, that answers my previous question, thanks!
I always remember that stalac"T"ites are on the "T"op. Hope that helps..:-). Great shot. That door hasn't been moved in a while, I'd guess.
My Great Uncle always used to say "When the mites come up the tights(tites) come down." to remember the difference.
The Stalagmite on the floor look as though their glowing
Hey nvus! Been awhile! I always remember stalagmites are on bottom when I trip over one and require stitches.
It's awesome how everything seems to sparkle in this image.
That archway over the door is cool!
I hated Science class!
Wow, that's interesting. I don't think I've ever seen these on any other gallery pictures here.
What a wonderful shot!
ewwww......looks like saliva
I thought it was really just ice at first.
Transcendental and nvus...I thought up another way to remember the difference (which earned a round of applause from a tour group I was part of exploring caves in Puerto Rico!)
Stala"C"tites - C as in "ceiling" since they grow on top.

Stala"G"mites - G as in "ground" since those grow on the ground.
Great shot. Great series. Great website!
Anyway...I always remember that stalactites hang from the ceiling so you would have to hang on tight (tite) to keep from falling.
looks like they are havin' babies on the floor
These things ( 'mites and 'tites) are usually only in caves, right? That's neat that they are in a building...although it IS cavelike..... very cool.
