can you recall what it was? was it a tomb? or was it monumenting the completion of the castle?
[speechless . . . . . . . . . . ]
Could it have been perhaps an intricate lamp or beacon? Do you think it was a road marking of sorts, Motts?
The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe . . . ;-)

Lynne, you have such a creative eye.
Maybe a marker indicating a home, (in this case a castle) nearby?!
That's beautiful Motts! Do you have it in color also?
this place looks amazing!
Very striking!
I love how the infrared makes the scene look as if it's been snowing. I really love when a photograph tricks the viewer.
How strange... very interesting shot, a marvel in black and white, albeit rather puzzling
I got it!

It's a sideways cup holder.
It formerly held a bell.
Reminds me of a compass almost... a compass with a.. chapel.. on top..?
soap despenser???? Wash before u enter.
I agree with faaus, the instant I looked at it I thought 'an old bell toll'; perhaps to alert the people of the house that visitors had arrived. Very neat.
no, there are two of these things, one on each side of the entranceroad, at about 70meters from the front of the castle.
in the 70's i worked @ Met. State in Waltham. We did our best.
ha ha, narnia
In fact this was a lamp, there was another on the other side of the road. The lamp was in the circular part.

Question: What is the first letter of the word "abandoned?"
