My sister was born with cancer (Neruoblastoma) and that bent her spine Scholiosis - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scoliosis ).
For years she had to wear a modern equivalent of that body brace and has a much straighter back now because of it.
Unfortunately, the only permanent treatment is spinal fusion to correct the curve.

thats sad.
it looks like a little kid was the one wearing it.

Then i thought it was a pair of heels with straps.
I threw all my broken shoulder slings and stuff away during the great house cleaning purge of last autumn, but I may still have a tortuous canvas with metal slat and rivet leg brace designed for me ages ago. Only wore it a couple of times. Hurt. Rivets left green oxidized patina marks on my leg(washed off)
I was trying to avoid being drafted at the time.Sort of regret not having been in the service, but, of course we had Vietnam back then and that changed everything.
The brace was for a dislocated knee that hadn't set right.DR> also said there is a one centimeter ball of bone in that knee that is probably congenital and of no consequence.
Subsequent injuries seemed to have " cured " that knee and I have no pain.
on topic;
Very uncomfortable looking... I'm not being mean here, but I hear that they are very easy to spy on a person & makes them look a little disfigured. ;
My dad was born in Germany.
He was drafted at (maximum) age 35
when he was expecting my oldest brother
in 1943.
He landed with the Normandy invasion
he didn't have a gun because he was a
medic.All in all he didn't complain and
even romanticized about it.
But the separation was hard.
My middle brother and I were and are
half a band and were a songwriting team
when he was drafted in 1966,and that seemed wrong to me.He got out on a
medical discharge after a couple of months
but I think in some ways he regrets that.
My oldest bro was in school and simply
would have told them he's gay.
I'll tell you this : If they invade Iran I'll volenteer
even at my age and creaky condition 'cause
I hate those bastards.
