In Memoriam

In Memoriam

The topmost plaque is a crest which illustrates a shield with a wolf's head, and the date 1868.

The lower is a relief sculpture of Doctor John Langdon-Down, the founder of Normansfield Hospital. The inscription at the bottom reads,

"This medallion was erected as a tribute of respect to the memory of Dr J.L.H. Langdon Down. by the employees 1897."

As an interesting side note, a BBC article describes the man, to which Down's Syndrome was named after, did not want to be named Down. Originally born as John Langdon Haydon Down, he wanted to change his name to Langdon-Down, and settled eventually for "John Langdon Haydon Langdon-Down".

To bad they tagged those pieces.
I like the brick work for the window header
Such disrespect for history... why anyone would do that to any piece of architecture is beyond me...

Very nice history tidbit though, Motts
What sort of dick would desecrate a memorial? Fools....

Awesome piece of history.
why do people have to destroy beautiful old buildings that aren't being used with paint on the walls and rocks through the windows.
These people should do someting about this place. This place is like, filled with history and stuff. Besides, who destroys memorials to famous people. So screwed up nowadays.
I went to the BBC link, very informative. I live in this very small town. There are these two Brothers named Parkenson live here. They have told me that they are related to this James Parkensonn of Parkensons disease fame. He is in the BBC link also.
I quite like the redundant name :).
Big T is a self-serving idiot. I feel sorry for him and people like him. Big T has no conscience and was undoubtedly left to his own devices growing up. He probably has no idea who his father is and his mother probably doesn't either.
How many people nowadays would be so admired by the people under them, that they would pay to put up a lasting tribute for them?
Any of us should be so lucky.. Most would be lucky to get a handful of pansies..
It is too bad that someone has defaced the Coat of Arms and the face on the plaque.

Does any know what the symbol on the Coat of Arms means ?

Signed: An American Soldier stationed in Mannheim, Germany.

The disrespect shown to this historical building is sickening and sad......your history lesson, however, was grand!
Its terrible what they did to the front of that building. Its so wrong on so many levels. How sad really. I agree they have no respect period. Nice shot though Motts. Thanks for the info above too. Very informative as always.
This "Big T" person is really making me angry right now...
BIG TEEE IN THE HOUSE HAHAHA 3 AGER
WHY did the taggers have to ruin this? :-/
LOL @ J-131274. Big T is an ass who needs to be publicly whipped for desecrating this beautiful old building.

Okay, that's a bit extreme, but seriously. What a classless moron.
Bloody tossers, all of them. I can't quite understand how this gets around as a past-time, even here in England. Go to a pub. D:<
