Niche Painting

I've never seen religious paintings done is this surrealist style... this looks to be a depiction of the garden of Eden.

Wow! The use of color in this fresco is fantastic! You're right, Motts - that is an unusual style of art` for this type of building, but given the time period during which the hospital was built, a time when new genres of artwork were beginning to gain widespread popularity, it begins to make sense that one would find this style being integrated into more traditional settings.
Ahhh... is she spanking him?
St Francis of Assisi?
If it is, then that's St Clare.
Its Mr. Ma, and Ma Jude....it was before she got her paddle..... **runs like hell, hides ...clunk!! ...click!!!...***
By the way, that is an eye-popping piece of art. Gorgeous colors. Does it look almost like he is standing on an Orca? I'd love that hanging in my living room...
I think it's san Francesco..

Bill is right.
yeah, i'd have to say St Francis also.

and that must be the Orkus Pinochous, to have such a wooden nose! :P
The "other" artist here amazingly restrained him/herself.
yes, how kind the "other artist" didn't deface this gorgeous painting.
suppose it was done by a patient?
amazing colors in it. Beautiful artwork
It's amazing how time and neglect have not touched the paint. Like somehow the plaque of disrepair and abandonment cannot touch this one pure thing.
That is very pretty--it's a modern looking tecnique
I love this painting. It's sort of odd and very colorful.
Just wonderful! it so refreshing to see such color!
I think minktail may be on the right track. Maybe it was done by a former patient.
WELL, WHAT EVER IT IS, ITS SAD THAT ITS LEFT TO ROTT THERE.....
I don't suppose this painting occurred after closure?
This was made after closure...the technique is to new ,the color to vibrant..wonder who made it? do you have pictures of the hospital when it was running?
prrrrr....creepy
I think the 'other' may well have done the painting. This looks too vibrant, and has all the earmarks of a significant contemporary graffiti artist. The bird at the apex of the piece looks like a G. It could be the 'other' was signing his work.
I would have to say that who ever painted this mural might have been tripping on LSD at the time.

The tree is growing at strange angles.

The bird on the lower left looks like it is fake and has been placed on a stick.

The birds on the lower right look like they have been forever attached to the tree.

Who is the woman in blue ?

Signed: An American Soldier stationed in Germany.

In a straight and un diagnosed eye, this style of atr is called cubism. A modern form of art possibly ranging from the 50's-60's ish. But to the bent and diagnosed eye, it's probably a pastoral to the artist.
I like to wish Motts and Opacity fans a Happy Easter. Rock on and DARKNESS IS YOUR FRIEND.
oh look the little snale is going to the garden too
I've been in this place and seen this painting Many a time, i find it quite strange :/
Beautiful. I'm really glad that the "other" artist refrained from defacing this. The thought that the building will be destroyed (comment on last pic) is really sad.
Also think it is odd that the paint around it is peeling but the painting itself doesn't even have a crack.
the painting was not done after closure, it was there when I worked there in the late 70's. I think it was done during the 60's, which fits with someone else's cubist theory. It may have been done by a patient, certainly in the 60's LSD was used at the hospital though don't think this is relevant to the artist here!
Very strange........
thank god the graffiti artist had enough sense to leave the artwork alone
funny reading all that! I did the mural in the church in the early 80's not 70's it is st francis and it is painted with a mixture of oil and acrylic, i was the artist in residence for 6 years then came to do my m.a. in new york. and am still in the U.S! it is very strange suddenly thinking about the place and finding it is no more, but instead all these pictures and comments.
I worked at CKH in 1980's and remember seeing this artist at work. There were also two large paintings in the Main Hall underneath here but I haven't seen any photographs of them. Some beautiful images here but it's so sad to see how the building has been left to deteriorate.
Remember many good times working here....
