Wow! I wonder why they removed the chimneys?
Other than that the exterior remains relatively unchanged.
THE CHIMNEYS ADD SOO MUCH TO THE BUILDING, WHAT A SHAME.
We all noticed the missing chimneys right off, great shot Motts, one of my favourites!
Where are the Chimney's? Ed from Oregon
proberly upgraded to gas central heating, its to do with health and safety issues i suppose. they should have kept them though
Without proper upkeep (depending on the construction of course) chimneys can start to deteriorate. Perhaps when they upgraded to a more modern form of heating (they would have had to at some point...can you imagine trying to heat that place with wood even in the 50's?) they took them down so they wouldn't have to worry about a stray brick beaning someone out for a stroll.
i love seeing the progression of the trees in comparison shots such as this.

beautiful...
Those patrolling police cpould not keep someone from stealing those chimneys, apparently. How useless the yare.
A building from this era in the UK would more likely have been heated by coal, not wood. Coal is a more efficient method of heating, but smells hideously and, of course, is a dangerous pollutant.
i love looking at the trees too! those kind of chimneys become structurally unsafe and often have to be taken down.
It's a shame the chimneys had to come down, but at least the entry seems to still be intact.
Gee Motts, I hope you rang Gordon!! LOL
Yeah Motts - don't forget to ring me!!!! LOL
mots who r u
As sad as it is, for heating effeciency the older central heating units, the ducts would be cut near windows to reduce cross room air cirulation, but seeing how the windows weren't properly insulated when the air ducts were installed. So defeating the purpose as the warm air would leave from out around the window stripping.
Neat cloud effect!
amazing,
Just think of all that went on here over the years. makes you wonder how many secrets there are hidden in the walls. its a shame they let it become the way it is. they really are beautiful buildings and look gorgeous on a hot summers day!
awh those chimneys were awfully thin and snapped-off.I have one of them right here.
My father worked for the hospital for a number of years he workedin the power hse which supplied power to the hospital & also he worked in the bioler hse which pumped heating from x4 lancashire coal boilers fed on coal which then produced steam which also produced all the hot water the hospital reqd.Very sad the hospital has su-come to this terrible state by the then politianians that put the death wish on the institution that supplied hundreds of jobs & feed families for years.
the chimneys were only removed recently - they were dangerous & about to fall.
I hate that the chimneys aren't there anymore.
I lived here from 1970 until 1982 it was fantastic
