Altar

Altar

A beat up altar remained in the corner, it seems to have been overturned and under some birds at some point. Decorative items removed from the walls left marks in the wallpaper, sometimes revealing interesting patterns underneath.

AH-HA! So that's what those crazy torchiere shaped thingies were on the wall in that other photo of the chapel! That looks like an interesting border pattern, and even like lettering that might have been on the wall behind what probably was a sconce that held some type of religious object. I wonder why they would have placed it over the lettering?
Exactly GirlJaye...the letters are religious. Looks like the chapel was remodled...
From Wikepedia...The IHS on the wall where the decoration was removed...
"In the Latin-speaking Christianity of medieval Western Europe (and so among Catholics and many Protestants today), the most common Christogram is "IHS" or "IHC", derived from the first three letters of the Greek name of Jesus, iota-eta-sigma or ΙΗΣ. "
Ahhhh! Right you are, Tony! I actually speak both Latin and Greek (because, you know there are so many high paying jobs out there for linguists in the dead language field), but that being the meaning of the writing on this particular wall didn't cross my mind - I couldn't quite make out the letters. Wonder why they chose to remodel over it? Hey, I'm bummed that your Greek font didn't transfer over to the website here.
thanks Mr. Motts, now i know what the triangles on the wall are!
the geek letters didn't come over at first, but someone was nice enough to fix it...thanks!!!!
Wow, thats a beautiful altar..
Probably worth a fair bit with a little restoration.
Love the shot!
god I would love to restore that alter!
I wonder what happens to stuff like that altar during a renovation. Do they sell it? Reuse it as something else? Trash it? It'd be a shame if they just trashed it. You guys are right - it would be worth the time and effort to restore something like that.
it looks like a movie set for doing evil human sacrafices.
Beautiful. It reminds me of my childhood somehow.
Haha yeah, reminds me of End Of Days where they attempt to sacrafice the chosen one on the altar.. Hmm
Ah GirlJaye, such is the dilemma of urban exploration & it's "take nothing, leave nothing behind" credo.
While I totally understand & for the most part agree with it, it would just kill me to leave something like this behind, only to see it smashed up & disgarded during demolition just a little while later ... UGH!
looks like im a little behind the times here.. great shot motts!
I gotta catch up now.
:)
exelent shot, the celtic cross is a great acent to the altar
hahaha listening to the beggining of death on two legs from queen this shot looks like it comes strait from a horror movie lol.
In the name of sheer sanctity, in the name of the blood my crusading ancestors from England, it is sickening to me to see that such holiness defaced and made fun of !
If this is the alter from the original catholic church, there will most probably be a holy relic from one of the saints in a stone on top of the alter. If this is still there, this should be reverantly removed to another catholic church,
I AM HAVING TROUBLE THINKING ITS BIRD POOP.HOW WOULD IT GET OVER THE LIP OF THE ALTER?I BELIEVE IT MAY BE ORBS.
WHAT BETTER PLACE TO GATHER THAN THE CHAPEL.COULD HAVE BEEN THE MOST WONDERFUL ROOM THEY HAD IN THE TIME.
maybe they want prey for us , no really, it´s m m m amazing and creepy
