Asylum in the Distance

I didn't expect to see the hospital once I crested the top of the outer wall... we were all excited to get down there and see this beautiful structure, but the light was fading fast.

Zern and I went in for recon as quickly as possible... things were planned quickly and smoothly. Now, to wait for darkness to make our approach for the morning light.

Unfortunately we didn't realize how far north we were; our latitude and the summer season created an almost perpetual daylight (to us New Yorkers). The early sunup and small, uncomfortable European rental car led to sleeping for about half an hour before going in... not very fun.

To spend a night in such surroundings must have been awesome despite the discomfort.
That view!!!
That is stunning!
We should've slept inside thinking back on it... ah well.
Oh my God - that is huge!

(Shut up, ~Me!)
Mmm, hilltop views.
Motts I can completely understand now what you said about this view being a moment you'll never forget. It's breathtaking.
who want to move there ? i do
Oh MAN! I'D move there if I could....Is it me (not ~ME) or is that complex rival
Danvers? Gorgeous!
Nice!!!!
WOW!!!!
I second that.
Has anyone imagined how much more we puny little humans could accomplish if we didn't have to eat or sleep?!?
Loving the rolling hills of the Brittish islands.
Em, Marty, those are two of the things I like the most about being a human. ;-)
It's like something out of a fairy tale. Like when I first looked I thought that was a newer castle not an asylum.
wow that looks brilliant.
lynne, i'm w/you on the eating & sleeping!
motts, this view is gorgeous! this must've been an incredible trip for you.
It's incredible...there is nothing that gives away the fact that this shot was taken in 2006. It really looks like it could have been taken years and years ago. It's beautiful.
I love the view. Thats sooo cool. I love the green and the hills...
I live in the desert...all the green here still has a brown tint to it!....I cant wait to do a trip to europe...
This is simply premium. Sadly, us humans need sleep and food. :[
A place where it's sunny all the time? Count me out
What an exceptional landscape!

Kind of foreboding, isn't it? One fortress preceding another fortress?
Oooooooh.......my.........GOD~!

*is utterly speachless*
Wow, incredible view. Awesome shot.
Wow. What a stunning shot. The architexture over in Europe is amazing...truly. With the lush scenery too, it looks like a castle out of the fairy tales.
Amazingly beautiful. A poster of that would be incredible.
all of these pictures are an adventure. So much history and wounder, I can get lost in it.
OH MY GOD!! wallpaper pleeeeeaaaaassseee! I dont think my printer can do it justice. please Sir Motts, I beseach you!
Being my obvious self..... beatiful!.
Can you actually grt inside the asylum , or do you need permission of some kind
Makes me think of Ireland. I'm of Irish decent. My grandmother was from Newry N. Ireland. Wish you'd some shoots in Ireland.
The only thing more beautiful than the asylum in this shot is the gorgeous landscapes. So many hills and fields.. this must be remarkable in bright daylight.
Probably said already...OMG PLEASE MAKE THIS A WALL PAPER!!

Awesome and beautiful shot Motts. Just breathtaking..
that looks alot like Powerscourt House (Wicklow, Ireland... you should visit if you haven't already) amazing shot

i saw this site only a week ago but on thursday i got to experience this view first hand. the excitement of knowing in only a short time we would be exploring this truly ONCE magnificent building.
If there wasn't a chance for security guards being about, I would of curled up next to the stone wall on the soft grass.
Your comments create such a sense of anticipation.........I can't wait to see the asylum!!!!! It looks so amazing in this photo!
WALLPAPER!!!!!
Another great photo again Motts. Such a breathtaking shot. Love it...can't wait for whats ahead.
American people always seem so amazed at the landscapes in the UK is there no countryside like this in the states? ive never been
WOW! that is just amazing!
can't believe I was there like two days ago and knew nothing about this....still, I visited "the lodge", an abandoned house on the denbigh moors. It was nowhere near as big as this but still eerie and haunting because of the location. it was a asylum (maybe an overflow from this place?) shortly after WW I.
hang on a sec...is it even still there?? the most newest headline I've seen for this place said 2009 is when "demolishing will commence" NOOOO what a waste....
Oh wow, thanks for that Lara! I had no idea about 'The Lodge'. Being in Wales, it's pretty easy for me to get to.

Would you say it was worth a trek to get some photos...?
Kez, definitely worth a visit. It is only a ruin now, but still quite stunning, especially because of the location. I don't suppose it will last much longer, either.
I've done a bit of research and found the one I think you're talking about. You're so right about the location; it makes the whole thing deeply atmospheric!

And if I'm getting that vibe from a couple of blurry photos online, being there must be quite something.

Doesn't look like it'll survive this winter if it's a harsh one, so I'd better get a wriggle on...!

Many thanks again for the heads up, Lara! :)
