The Asylum

The Asylum

We pulled up to the front gate so I could take some shots through the fence, and I'm glad I did...

A contractor pulled up to the gate blaring his horn, impatiently waiting for someone to come over and open it up. I asked if he would mind us following him inside to take some outside photos, he said that would be up to the guy with the keys. He was getting very impatient and left after about 5 minutes when no one showed up... no exterior shots except from behind the fence then, ah well.

Here's a historic photo of the asylum circa 1920:

Beautiful design, beautiful architecture. Seems a shame to let decay.
Its untouched! Amazing looking building.
Gorgeous shot!
I agree Lynnie! And thank you for the old photo Motts, I love to compare. I see the rails are gone from the steps too.....
this building has such an aura about it. it demands attention with its size but then holds such beauty in its architecture and design.
Wallpaper please????? Beautiful shot.
Beautiful shot. What kind of trees are those to make it look like winter?
I love to see the before and after.
Bravo to the architect that designed it!
So many different ideas for this structure, and it all blends together so beautifully!
Just amazing, Motts! THANKS! : )
IR Shot? It is MY favorite of the whole group. I think those trees on either side really make the picture.
OMG I love it!!!
Nice shot :o)

I have the original postcard from 1920 odd on my wall!
it really pisses me off to see those great old buildings left to decay like that...or torn down to build a nice new park lot.
great picture! it would make a good wallpaper too.
A very powerful shot.. Like the "before and after"s
Great photo Motts!

I also like the before and the now shot. Thanks
Beautiful place thanks for helping it stay alive.
this is my favorite picture on this site
this shot sooooo makes me think of hill house, the creepy gothic mansion from 'The haunting. though that film was set in america the real house they used was actually in england too... and yes it's even scarier in real life...

bobbo this won't get torn down for a supermarket, in Britain old buildings like this are all eing turned into fancy flats (apartments) and sold to rich people... i'm sure this will go the same way
Definitely gets my wallpaper vote.

Excellent shot Motts.
How can you think something like this is beautiful? Sure the architecture is something to impress but the idea of it? It's an Asylum! Both pictures are haunting, the second you can even see the "men in white". For those of you who are interested in having this picture as a background, I find you very disturbed.
Well then it's to bad you can't see the beauty in it too Rebecca.
I would hate to go through life seeing only the black and white without seeing whats in the gray areas too. If looking at beauty in EVERYTHING is being disturbed then I'm happy to be that way.
Why, you're right. It's an asylum. Where people were able to find a bit of help and sometimes peace.

That certainly is disturbing...
I put it to you that the attitude Rebecca has just exhibited is the reason these places were situated miles from the sane people, and never ever spoken of.... Uncle Walter went off to live in the country, you know.
Exquisite. An historical beauty the likes of which will never be seen again. And no, that's not necessarily a good thing. If you ask enough psych patients if de-institutionalisation was the better option, you'll find that there's a case for being under a solid roof for the night with food and reliable starched nurses with a regular routine and someone to help you with symptomatic relief when things got a bit ragged. Yes, there's nasty stories, but so are there today about elder care, and more than half of it is B.S.
...besides these old buildings are great - you can play cricket in the hallways and volleyball in the middle of the wards when the patients get bored and admin have gone home...
The buildings have a mystique and a power one doesn't get in modern architecture. The beauty comes from the uniqueness that they have.
They are stern, and a bit scary looking perhaps, but this is usually due to age. When they were built, many were originally showcases.
It Looks Fairly Creepy
Ehhhh......you win some, you lose some! Asylum or not, history is history. Respectable or not, it is something we strongly learn from. At least this generation is less ignorent than our Grand Parents, to even our Great Grandparents time. Back then when it was easy and accepted to turn their backs away and live in self decadence and indulgence. then also put the blame on others quickly.
i bin in der!!! propa freeky
i live just down the road from the hospital and its so sad to see the pictures like this.:(
i just want them to do something with it now.. and quick!!
I was in there last week. Its falling apart inside. Hope they sort it out soon.

Hallucinator, that is just incredible! Thanks again!
My father was the chaplain there. As small children we would visit the elderly ladies with him. I remember how one frail little woman would unravel her blanket at night and knit beautiful minature clothes with hair pins.
wow,beautiful.
why did the mental close down for ever??????????And i want it 2 be re built agin so my mum can work there agin cause she is quit said that it has shut down please open it agin for everyone to come back there and work agin

SLIGHTY NERVOUS ABOUT GOIN ON HALLOWEEN NOW.
i hear the living tv most haunted team are conducting an investigation over the halloween period. Is there a chapel or church on this site ? The pictures are quite spooky .
yeah most haunted are doing ther investigations on the asylum finding many a ghost and sad story last night was the first night of the village of the damned (most haunted on living)
good pic shame its been left to decay
This building is far to beautiful to be demolished. Its an amzing place. It would have made a good 'Haunted Hotel'.
Sad.
Pity the building is going to soon be demolished. Its such a beautiful building wich holds so many secrets!! I would have been a wonderful museum or tourist attraction. They rebuilb it and turn it back into an asylum!!!
Great photo's, great shame its being demolished, anyone watching Most Haunted there?
is this hospital still around or has it been demolished? if it still there can the public visit it? would be interesting to see it for real dont you think?
better make it quick its being demolished very soon i believe most haunted are doing some paranormal work there and it is being demolished this weekend or in the coming weeks
most haunted spenf 7 days there thay did it proud
i thought the most haunted thing was a lie because how could they hear the noises and not the viewers at home
did you see it on TV ? it is such a reck
i thingk they should not demolish it.
I LOVE this picture, i watched most haunted, and i find it sad, and very devistating that they are going to just pull down all that history for some houses!

I hope they change there mind an re-store it again!!!
in todays era the thought of losing even one more piece of such rich architecture and history appals me ! this is a wonderfull building and deserves a chance as something new ! to me it matters not whether its housing or hospital or even offices so long as its saved ! this is just my opinion ! ps i did not like the tv program on all hallows eve set at this location !!! cheers D
Stunning!
wow, stunning. It makes me shiver!my big bro has been there once!he heard screaming and crying and moans! we should protest
outside and make sure they dont demolish that incredible building!
never been in there and i would not want to
my dad went there early on today but he said the gates where locked and the security guard wouldnt allow him to go in and take a photo.
He said since the fire it is too dangerous to go in now. the security guard told my dad that wild horses live on the grounds now and one of the docotrs still lives there as it was like a little village in the grounds, i dont know wether he was joking or not.
I hope this dosent get demolished, its a beautiful building and i think that it should be restored as a museum.
this is so beautiful.... one of my favorite pics
Thank you Motts! This is the first time I've been on your site, and it's FANTASTIC!
You've also helped me ever so much with my GCSE summer art project, so thank you so so much! I love your site and will definitely be going on your site regularly now! Thank you and your images were FANTASTIC! I enjoyed reading the debate about the poison cupboard, and agree that it was proberbly just a ciggarette cupboard but keeping an open mind. Thank you.
It's a grade 2 listed building... I don't think they will demolish it!! Shame though... me and my m8s are planning on a visit ;)
Such a beautifull and unique design. (For an asylum that is.) Or if you prefer the term correctional facility. (Spelling?) I suppose it depends on your view point.

But again, It's such a lovely building though I took a look at what was suspected to be a seclusion room in a previous photo of yours, it was very small and had a fernace or heater of some sort jutting from the wall, I did not find that very safe for the patient.

It looks almost like a castle, that would quite confuse me if I were to ever pass by without knowledge of what the place was. (Provided there were no signs pointing out the obvious.)
I would just like to point out that The North Wales Hospital was never called Denbigh Mental, and never Denbigh Asylum!

It was just the main hospital in North Wales, many people were mentally ill, and were drawn to suisude. As im from Denbigh it really anoys me that people make it out to be something it not!

Many people were only in the for illnesses such as depression, many patience were latter let out into "care in the community" because there wasn't much wrong with them, they just couldn't look after them self. Now that people have relised illnesses such as Alzheimer's, depression and just old age is normal theres no need to stick everyone into a hospital and give it a nick name like Denbigh Mental!
Very forbidding!
amazing!!
stunning photograph

Question: What is the last letter of the word "hospital"?
