I love these long hall shots.
These hallways are just amazing! The light gives it a kind of life.
this hallway is its own optical illusion . just stare at it for awhile .
Same nice tiled floor, not so clean ceiling!
do you think maybe these long and almost disturbing corridors used to have an adverse effect on the patients? cos i mean...i dont like them..they look cool...but feel nasty.
The long and endless hallway....
You know Tommeh!!!, that's a really interesting idea you have there. All these structures that Motts has taken pictures of, the designs of the many different rooms, hallways, window placements... I wonder if there WAS a rhyme or reason as to why they were constructed the certain way that they were. It's been studied how colors, like wall paint, can effect a person's mood, so why not explore the way a whole building is designed for its specific purpose?
I'm sure that because of the area this asylum covered, long hallways could not be avoided. But, maybe that is why there are so many windows, and why they are so close to each other. To allow sunlight into what was no doubt a very intimidating hallway for staff and patients to use. Can you imagine, when it was in use, having to walk down these long hallways without windows, and just the lights you see above?
Just think of how cool and pristine this must have been when it was new. . .
markymark is right, if you look at it long enough, the way the alternating windows cast winding shadows all the way down this hall almost makes it seem like it starts to spin and spiral. . . Freaky!
wow motts its absoultly breath taking motts!!
Ladyhawke04008 about the construction i dont know ... but the colors used are intentional to cause determinate reactions on the patients.
Thanks, Jmack! : )
I was just thinking how intimidating this hallway could be to a patient, if they had to walk down it with a staff member, or by themselves. It is so long to begin with. And if it didn't have any windows? That would make it all the more so!
i like the fact that the windows are placed not in front of each others but alternate ...
MISS HAWKE is quite correct. The hallways were VERY intimidating, whether on our own or with a group of fellow patients and staff being escorted somewhere .
*sings and dances* I've got a candle and I've got a spoon I'm in a hallway with no doors and no rooms.
ready? ... set ...... ruuuuuuunnnnn!!!!!!!
Can you imagine the sounds in these great halls-rather soberingwhen we look & hear NOTHING!
..have just watched a program entitled 'phsycic detectives' regarding Severalls, these seem to conjure up corridors of doom and despondancy, like the whole building is in a time warp..still
I still say that a sock race on a clean floor would be fun!
either side of windows lay quadrangles where patients could sit,a german architect designed severalls
yo- im just a kid doin a project on TB and other diseases but these pics help alot with knowing how the patients lived in these kinds of situations...
I work with real people (survivors...) who used to live here and in nearby associated institutions. These images certainly reflect at least the sense of isolation that I have heard ex patients talk of. The decay contrasted with the echoes of the opulent architecture captured in your pictures seems to mirror the contrast within society in that time of those within and those outside the perimeter.
Hauntingly evocative and for me providing a most graphic reminder of what those I support have lived through.
Awesome, in every sense....
I love this picture... and wow for people personal relation. to these places, it keeps reminding me of how real it really is.
Love the oval affect of the light shining through the hall.
