The sounds of deconstruction now shook the walls and we could feel the vibrations through the ground. If I remember correctly, there was a corridor to the right that was sealed off at the far end, which we took to get upstairs for a better look.

I don't know the purpose of the yellow pipes on the wall down there, I didn't get a chance to inspect them closely.

...and i was just about to ask what the hell those were...
This is a fascinating shot with the various colors and textures and the ceiling dripping down at the end of the hall.
Ok so at this point you were actually inside a building complex while it was being demolished?

I like it!

I also await your book.

:-p
Im probably wrong, but i've seen pipe things like those used to help handicap people get up, just a thought, but im not sure.
I'm stumped about the pipes too. Motts, is that one of your team in the window at the far end?
And Motts, let's not make that a posthumuous publication, even though it might increase sales, huh? ;-)
well from my plumping training, im pretty confident in saying they are gas pipes. here by law they are yellow and as a general rule they use blue stickers reading 'GAS' as the clashing colours make it pretty clear what it is.

i HATE walking down those corridors and finding a dead end :P and theres so many in that place. they should be more considerate and unlock the lot.
they are either gas pipes or cold water pipes. Great pic
Wonder whats in the door window at the end of the corridor, I suspect it's not a construction worker. :)
Slightly further down from the bars on the same side is the Operating Theatre. It's particularly freaky, even though it's empty - but maybe that's because I know what sort of operations were undertaken there...
surlygirl, i was gonna ask the same thing. They were probably water pipes. but i'm no expert.
Those werent pipes of any sort, between them used to be a public pay phone. I used to sit on the pipes when making a call!
even on close inspection it's no clearer. there may well have been a payphone there - there's certainly marks on the wall between the pipes to suggest that something was there that has since been removed...

as for the Operating Theatre - it was surprisingly not-creepy, just like the rest of the place. it was pitch black though...
although the next time we went we had a VERY bad moment - i remarked to my friend that a trick of the light was making it look like there was someone standing at the end of the corridor. about half a second later we realised someone WAS standing there. not a good moment!! turned out to be pikeys on the rob.
Jaysus! Did you shit youself?! I would've!!
Help! What are "pikeys on the rob"?
sian - just a bit! however, yesterday morning was the closest i've ever come to actually proper doing that! take one early morning (dark) visit to an empty asylum, a bad experience last time plus a strange noise in a deserted ward - instant laxative!

lynne - sorry...british vernacular. pikeys = people who like to call themselves "travellers" but are so far removed from romany traveller culture it's not even funny. they are currently busy stripping every ounce of copper from the cabling left in severalls. when we saw them leaving the other week they were loaded up with that plus about a million fluorescent tubes. now, each to their own and all that, but bumping into them when we're all technically breaking the law, them with big stripping knives and us with expensive cameras is not my idea of a good time!!!
Pikeys on the rob! Learning something new every day! Like shrimp on the barbie!

I'll bet you were scared! Did you get some good pics?
i took some distinctly mediocre pics! key to it for me is looking at somewhere 15 miles up the road from me in rural england that motts made his own...seeing all that is worth every ounce of fear for me.

(this is of course utter bollocks and i was petrified every second. it was dark tho - 6am!!)
If you've seen the movie Snatch, Brad Pitt's character is a pikey.
Ha! You cannot understand a word he says in that film! As is the experience I've had with most "Pikeys"...just nod and smile.....
...and back away slowly, making no sudden moves
lol.
I have had that experiance before twice...but it turned out to be fellow photographers one time
and little 12 year old chavs another time
so we screamed and shit to scare them away *evil* lol
I say the pipes are put there to keep everyone stumped.
Pikey? In Michigan there is a thing called piking we do.
indeed between the pipes was a payphone and barton ward ibelieve lay beyond those doors.
C-Note, I have to ask, as a fellow Michigander, what is Piking? I've not been introduced to that term before. Unless you are talking about Pike fishing, I've heard the term used in that regard. If it's something that is not appropriate for this site, PM or email me. Email is my name at gmail dot com.
is that a man behind the door at the very end? didn't expect to c that!!
maybe a construction worker?
no this building is not being demolished as they cannot do that no its a listed building also i made a recent visit to the perimeter of it ands it all standing ive been trying to find a way through the damn fence lol
