Speak of the Devil! Another Magrite, all it needs is the steam engine coming out of the fireplace.
I think that's the strangest looking fireplace I've ever seen. Usually they're wider, not taller...
I think this fireplace might have been utilized more for the burning of rubish than to provide warmth...
It's for coal most likely, I would be surprised if it was still in use by the time this place closed though.
This fireplace seems almost flush with the wall.
looks like the fireplace in Beetlejuice
How sterile, what worthless hole in the wall. Methinks that it wasn't ever functional anyway and never served any purpose other than someone gave an afterthought .
I HAVE NOTICED BACK IN ENGLAND AND ALL THE OTHER PLACES BACK OVER THERE THAT ALL OF THEIR FIRE PLACES LOOK LIKE THAT, TALL AND SKINNY, MY GUESS IS THAT THAT WAS THEIR STYLE OF FIRE PLACES AND THE AMERICANS HAD ANOTHER STYLE OF FIRE PLACES (WIDE AND NOT SO TALL). ? !
I agree with Mathue. Less coal was required to get the same heat as a bunch of wood, so less space was needed to burn it.
Those of you who guess coal or better yet, coke, are correct. Many english fireplaces weren't meant for wood.
Coke.lol....that was for paupers........Welsh coal boyo .delivered by train to the hospital on it`s own branch line
It's such a cute little fireplace. I want one.
That can be arranged...I`ll nip up there with my lump hammer and chisel...Might cost a bit to ship to the U.S.
I have an old fireplace like this one in my bedroom now, all the houses in the area have them, i remember the coal man coming round in his truck when i was a child and selling coal to the few who hadn't converted to gas fires. my grandmother would store the coal in a small brick shed in the garden called the 'coal hole' this style of fireplace was a victorian thing i think, they were all like it, but modern fireplaces in the uk are wider
I think coal would be used in the fireplace. That is what the Hellingly railway station was built for to transport coal to the hospital and as well for travellers, visitors etc
in the uk old fire places in smaller rooms like a bedroom had these small fireplaces whereas in larger rooms like the drawing room (living room) or kitchen had much larger ones to heat a larger space. they are now worth a lot of money for an original one!
