Geez, I wonder what these looked like when the place was first built.
That answers ONE question.... : > )
...
Wow.
The detail on that is beautiful. I would have loved to see it in its hayday.
i wonder if it "fell" or if it was dropped on someone??????
Oh no a guy is stealing my screen name and making bad comments :O
WHEN I SAW THIS PIC I HAD TO LOOK BACK AT THE PREVIOUS PIC BECAUSE I COULDNT BELIEVE THAT THIS BEAUTIFUL CHANDELIER WAS IN THAT UGLY CAFETERIA HALL. IT RALLY IS OUT OF PLACE THERE. BUT ANYWAY THIS PIC IS VERY AWSOME, I LOVE IT!
that would have been so cool to be there when it actually fell. kinda like Phantom of the Opera. Only in this case it would be Phantom of the Hospital.
It still amazes me that so much detail goes into creating these works of art and they are left to decay and we are the only ones who care or notice. I am glad that these photos capture the moment before all the beauty is lost to neglect. Thank you for that Motts.
Isn't it funny that these things are left here to rot. Makes you wonder if they wrecking crew takes them home or tries to sell them for scrap
JOE, i TOTALLY WONDER THE SAME THING.
all i can think about is the huge sound those chandeliers must've made crashing to the floor in the previously undisturbed silence of an empty building. i don't know why that thought makes me feel so sad...
I could see these photos appearing in a magazine, like National Geographic. They are that good. Bravo Motts!
Please do not go to Met State any more, we have had 2 sueisides this past week, it is all gone...there is no more security, now we have full time DPS Police officers and State Troopers...this is STILL STATE PROP which means, under Mass Genral Law $500 fine person and $1000 per vehicle, thanks..by the way GREAT site!
I'd re-wire the thing and put it in my hallway!
just imagine the sound it made.
In dead Silence.
KABOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
that ruined a comment.
big noise it mustve made hehe
first thought

Why would they have a chandelier???

shocking to think they actually thought about aesthetics.
One of Kirkbride's basic principles was that psychiatric hospital should have attractive, pleasant furnishings to facilitate patients' mental health and hopefully lead to their discharge from the facility. That's why he specified gardens, trees, large windows, wide hallways, high ceilings, careful selection of staff, and regular entertainment programs in the auditorium, among many other things. He recognized the problems of having too many patients in one hospital. He advised that patient bedrooms be as large as possible, to give patients "quiet and privacy...provided their dimensions are not so great as to lead to two patients being placed in the same room." State hospitals, in his opinion, "should be made good enough for the highest class of its citizens" because what is good enough for the most well-to-do patient "is none too good for the humblest of the unfortunates who are compelled to look to these institutions for custody and treatment." The attitude underlying all of his recommendations was that "the best hospital, best built, best arranged, and best managed, is always the most economical in the end." But then came far more patients, low salaries, lack of maintenance, little or no staff training...and we know the results. (the quotes are from a book I read recently but I can't remember its name)
does any bodynow what happen why the chandelier????
what kind of camera do you use?
