Love the light sneaking in at the top of the boards!!
This rocks! Is that porch fenced in as well as being boarded up???
Yes all porches had a thick mesh.
so, did this place start life as a TB sanitarium too?
No, this was always a psychiatric hospital... porches were a great way for patients to get fresh air without having to worry about leaving the building.
whats up with the honeycombed ceiling? is that for soundproofing or what?
The honeycombed ceiling is I think a concrete slab. The honeycomb matrix improves the strength to weight ratio by eliminating mass.
This picture makes me feel so sad for some reason. Thinking about the people who were looking out from this porch only to realize that they would never be free to go outside on their own
Well, some of the folks who looked out from that porch are living in halfway houses or living on the street or in their own apartment.
Actually this was a "3/4 ward" where folks could do their own laundry, cook their own food and come and go fairly freely compared to most other more restrictive wards at "the Met."
If no one could get out with the mesh fencing, wouldn't someone be prevented from getting in? The boards seem to be a bit excessive?
