I can't believe the Met is going the way of Dix and Danvers. :-(
Developers + Asylums = Bad news
Gotta put up more Wal*Marts!!! Ever see a movie called 'Red Dawn'? If that ever happens, we'll use all those Wal*Marts as fall-out shelters
Furcolo was a HUGE building, it's amazing to see an empty space where it once was. Saaaaad!
Oh I agree, this is soooo sad.....
What a pity ; ( Wish things like this wouldn't happen.
Actually Foster Furcolo was the gov. of Mass. in the early 60's and began the reform of the mental health and retardation system as we know it today. Better but not great, at least he took an interest.
Curse-ed Walmarts...how many more do we need?..seriously..?
wow...sad.....:(
Motts you have such a way of imbibing your photos with a sense of presence i've never seen before,my heart just sank in my chest.lol.
Daym! what a shame! I hate to see this happen.
its DAMN WHAT A SHAME lol ah well

why why do we really need more golf courses imagine this place green hills littlle flags and holes and rich smelly asses with sticks loged tietly between there cheaks
Now I feel depressed just looking at this picture.
I had a furcolo on one of my coats way back -- don't wear fur any more! Love my caffeine!
Sad......
When ever there is demolition IT IS ALL ABOUT MONEY!!!
personaly i think they should keep all of the kirkbrides cause they are historic sites they should be protected!!!!
Actually, I dont think that MetState is going down the same exact path as Danvers and others... I hear that the golf course is only supposed to be a smaller one to the front (9 holes). But, thats even if it gets built. I have the luck to live within 5 minutes of the place, so I hear whats happening and not happening there. They have been saying for years now that thats whats gonna happen, but I think that idea was scraped. Currently, it seems as though the main road leading from Trapleo Raod in Waltham all the way to the other road in Belmont is turned into a parkway, which will soon be open to the public. Hiking trails and bike paths are also being put in in the woods between there and Gabler Childrens Hospital (another abandoned hospital that I live within 5 mins of :) ). Then, from what I hear, the Medical and CTG will be renovated into housing or buisnesses. No word on the other buildings yet... and DEFINATELY NO WAL*MART! And, sice we are on the topic, there is a 3rd abandoned hospital :) the oppostie way of gabler on Trapelo Road called Olympus Specalty (Middlesex County Sanitarium in its earlier years) that closed down around 1999. Unfortunately, Pulte Homes bought that and has all ready leveled the place and opened condos on it. The only untouched hospital of the three is Gabler Childrens... which is owned by the city and sits on new conservetion land called 'Mackarel Hill'...

(my fingers hurt)
im sad its still being torn down
\BUT THANK GOD ITS NOT GOING TO BE A GOLF COURSE OR A WALLMART!!!!!!!!!!! :))))))))
Why do they tear these places down? I know that they still have State Hospitals {not so many in my neck of the woods} More Ghost Towns, anyway they build so they can tear down what a waste of money.
i went to this place met state in waltham its freaky stuff
When my mom was doing her psych training in nursing school, she trained in the Furcolo Building. I guess she spent a little time in the CTG, too. She says that Furcolo is where most of the newly admitted patients were placed while they underwent evaluation, and that the most severe cases were put in the CTG. It would have been awesome to see photos of inside the Furcolo, and to show them to my mom. She's got some pretty far out stories from the three months she spent there.
Good ridance!!!
I suppose the reason they tear down old buildings is partially due to a fascination with so-called "new and improved" structures, and also due to a focus on the financial bottom line. Asbestos abatement, lead paint removal, bringing vast plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems up to current code, retrofitting automatic sprinkler systems if the building doesn't already have one, universal design for accessibility, plus our changed ways of living/use of space and changed standards of privacy and patient rights...it probably is cheaper to tear it down and build from scratch. I wonder if they salvage what architectural elements they can before actual demolition. Many of these buildings have a quality of workmanship that cannot be duplicated today.
I really hate 2 c metro state torn down even though it is very creepy and spooky, but it's very sad how it starts to come to an END :-( :-(
