What a waste of such a lovely large tub. Any plans listed for salvage sales?
Muy buena imagen, y muy buena pagina web.
Weird....What is that above the cabinet on the wall??? AND...the cabinet...There appears to be a handle on the INSIDE of the door above the tub, AND, on the inner panel, another handle....???
The cabinet held the faucet and temperature controls.
I was going to question that too, thanks Motts. And I thought there was something very familiar about this tub.....and you answered that for me too!

The issue of political correctness and outdated medical terms was getting out of hand and has been removed. If you'd like to discuss this, feel free to start a discussion in the Mental Health fourm: http://www.opacity.us/forum/viewforum.php?f=6

Thanks :)
GOSH LOVE THA ART DECO TUB. GOES GREAT WITH THE TILE, HOWEVER NOT SO MUCH WITH THAT LINOLIUM
This also reminds me of Boston State Hosp. Motts, did you ever have a chance to photo BSH. before it's demise. It was laid out like most state hosp. in Ma. but I believe they started to shut it down in the 70's Work there for 3 years and always remembered it was a sad place.
No, unfortunately I missed out on Boston State :(
I didn't know there was a "Boston State." I remember one called "Metropolitan State" in Waltham, and there were several campuses ringing the suburbs, from Danvers to Tewksbury to Medfield. They're all closed now too.
yeeps...another blood tub!
what is with me and large amounts of human circulatory fluid spontaniously bursting from inanimate objects...
love ur work!
im curious; was this another hydrotherapy tub like at danvers, or just a tub for bathing and stuff?
this was a simple bath tub note no shackle rigging
The painting in the cabinet behind the tub is bizarre and unsettling. This is not a good visual for patients who are trying to bathe. It is certainly not a calming sight for the reportedly violent and disturbed women who were forced to reside there. Why not a field of flowers or a sunny lake scene while the patients are vulnerable, naked and being put into a tub. It certainly could induce anxiety in a person being forced to bathe in this scenario. It seems like a cruel joke played on the patients by the staff. This probably speaks volumes for the types of inhumane treatments those poor woman had to endure.
what painting?!
AS- As noted above, the cabinet contains plumbing fixtures, not a painting. Do you really think staff would take (or have) the time to paint pictures designed to make patients even more anxious? If so, they'd be certifiable themselves! If staff were angry/unhappy/nasty, they would more likely vent it through verbal or physical abuse, not through involved plots to subtly torture people with psychological games involving art! Whatever the case, these are plumbing fixtures, not a malicious artpiece!
Too bad you missed out on photographing Boston State Hospital
I think it also used to be Boston Lunatic Hospital.. My grandmother was their in the early 1960s. Then in the late 60's early 70s it was closed.. Then in the 1980's part of it was re-opened as Dorchester Mental Health Center. Also, there was Dorchester Counseling Center . On the grounds there were a Boston Pre-release. I worked for Dorchester Mental Health Center from 1982 - 1987, when all the State workers were transferred to other "mental health facilities in Boston...)
i think its interesting. You need more pictures of danvers state hospital more though. I just love the arcutecture it's really great. Talk with you later.
I brought a old house. with this kind of bath tub'
the house was built in 1943, i
I am viewing this on the day that there was a fire at the former Danver's State Hospital site. Apparently, the hospital was being converted into condo's. I can't help but wonder, if the "spirits" of those who resided at the hospital had something to do with the fire. Anytime there is a fire at a State Hospital I wonder if it is a result of the angry "spirits".
Wow, beautiful pic! The only thing is this has just reminded me that of a nightmare I have O_O
Isn't that odd... I suppose that was a popular design for metal ward bathrooms.
aww man where's the bubble bath??? haha
i would like to go in there
hey i took a bath in there
did you, Tom B? You didnt clean it after use though ;)
Look at the tile! Looks brand new!
It's like that in many of these old places.
