Cooling Tower

Cooling Tower

Not sure what this is, but the base looks to be a giant heat sink... looks like there were some festivities here as well!

Weird machine, Motts...Anyone ever see one before? Whats with the tank on top? It runs on 210, looking at the plug....
*I wonder who got lei-ed?*
That's a magnet on it's antivibration table. This magnet is filled with liquid mitrogen and used for nuclear magnetic resonance
Strange looking machine.
It's party time...break out the lei's!
it's the party machine where everyone went to get lei'd.
Looks like a giant amplifier!
Lynne to the rescue?
I haven't the first clue on this one.
Yikes, you don't??? Okay, anyone got a second clue??
It's the machine that fills up pinata's!! (possible incorrect spelling) The dials are: Candy Quantity, Candy Quality and Candy Corporation which allows up to 12 different name brands to fraternise in the one pinata!! (possible incorrect spelling)
Welcome back, Live - we've missed you. Come on over to the Forum!
a cooling tower that attracts plastic leis....weird and interesting at the same time.

PARTY AT THE TRAINING SCHOOL!
The weird thing about that machine is that it has the same pattern on the outside as a sound-proof room has on the inside. Odd.
Hmm... I agree, this looks like the stuff we had on the walls in the radio station I once worked at... Maybe this machine was noisy...

Interesting...
i bet this machine became outdated pretty quick. the heatsink design was innovative though.
I think it's definitely a heat sink, but the problem with the sound-room looking design is that you can't run a fan over the fins - they block each other out by being perpendicular.
SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THIS IS1
I'll explain some of the components without telling you the actual use of said apparatus:
The black outside structure: It's a pneumatic antivibration table. The round shiny metal covered with polymer would ''ride'' on pistons that would dampen any vibration from the floor of the environment (Made by Harvard Apparatus Canada).
The big off white container inside: It's a dewar container (like a thermos in your lunch box) that would hold liquid air or liquid nitrogen or liquid helium. That type of container would slow down the evaporation of your liquifed gas by insulation from the inside heat.
Rectagular panel with knobs: These are for controlling the flow and pressure of the gas. On the right side there's 2 ball gas regulators for precise adjustment of low flow and 9 rounded knobs which are needle valve regulators (for crude adjustments).
The 220v cable: I don't think that cable belong to this apparatus, it seems like a connector box at the end of the cable.
Small grey twin cable with connector at the front: These are cables for temperature reading using thermistors.
Outside material: Used to absorb mechanical energy, i.e., high and mid noise from the environment.
Cheers
Ok, I gotta know now.... What did it DO?
i know what it is.... its the central soap dispenser control unit. its controlled remotely from the pentagon and is programmed by frank zappa.... see you got me at it know..
Why can't somebody tell me the "ACTUAL USE OF SAID APPARATUS?" Whay's the big secret?
dear nancy if you knew youd never sleep again....
what would be the purpose of a antivibration table with a dewar flask ???
After THIS much controversy, I think we'd all sleep BETTER knowing what this was!!!
In order to get supraconductive properties out of metal you immerse say a coil of copper in liquid helium ( minus 264 celsius yes minus) then you would get a super strong magnetic field with the benefit of not having to sustain an electrical potentiel at that coil.....neet power it up remove the source of energy and forget about it ......well not really because once in a while you have to refill the container that hold the liquid helium and that would be the use of the dewar flask.......And what is the purpose of the SAID apparatus.......Brace yourself....It's a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer....yessssss it is used for the analysis of the chemical structure of organic compound by studying the nuclear magnetic moments of molecules or in other words the electron spin. It's a complex technic with complex instrumentation and complex data analysis
So there.....sleep well and stay tune for the next episode
Z
ok that is so weird, especially with the bright lei's on the floor!
It's a huge CPU cooler, i tell you!
That machine looks like it can cause some damage!
did they do some kind of nuculer testing there?
Hint: A University is using th buildings...

They probably put that thing away and forgot it.
The ultimate panic box.
That base is creepy looking
It's a good old fashioned hiney scrubber.
Trya Banks has one. You get em when you sign with Cover (It Up) Girl Cosmetics.
Yes, it's an eh, eh..

That power cord may or may not be part of the unit, and it may be 240V or it might be 120V, but I'm fairly certain it is high amperage and that is the reason for that type of plug configuration : if you were to look closely at it you would see that it has locking prongs that key into a matching recepticle. This is to prevent it from being jarred lose or from " popping ' out.
I have a lei exactly the color of the one lying to the right of the machine(red) on the fish netting that graces the wall behind my fish tank.
Makes about as much sense, too.
maybe the students doing the core samples found something really really good!! a big party
liquid helium....liquid nitrogen? ummm, all u would see of me would be ass and elbows if I came across that
When someone says its used for nuclear reactions/research its not the same as bombs or something.

I do like the leis though.
depending upon which state liquid N is in, it can be very dangerous... thanks
IT looks so strange having this dark, old-looking contraption (thanks to the other comments I don't have to wonder what it is now--or isn't) and the bright colors of the leis on the floor.

Looks like someone had a New Year's Party in here...and now they are a beautiful glowing green...

"I got lei'd in Hawaii" I swear to God I had a shirt that said that...from Hawaii (honeymoon 16 years ago)...
