Acceptance

I hope you enjoyed something a little different than what I normally do! This was my first attempt at shooting a model anywhere and it was a pretty cool experience, I will probably try again...

I'd like to thank Candace for being such a great sport about freezing her ass off (it was about 26°F inside!) and getting dirty in the hospital detritus for these photos, and Dash for helping lug around assorted props (and weapons!).

Again I'd like to reiterate that this gallery was not meant to depict the reality of Northampton State Hospital prior to closure, or any psychiatric facility, it was just a vision I had.

An angel wanders the ruins of an asylum. What a story could be created from that premis.
And Wow, What a vision it is !
Motts, you can take amazing pictures of ANY subject! Thanks for sharing, it was a beautiful story...
Absolutely amazing gallery, Motts. I look forward to the next one. =]
This was great, an absolutely stunning gallery!
Very Cool Mott, keep up the great work.
Ah Motts anything you do with your camera is astoundingly beautiful. Candace did a fabulous job, she could go into acting!

This was a beautiful way to tell a story, thank you to all of you for sharing this with us!
thank you Mr Motts and your angel candace
Motts, Candace, Dash....Great job!!!!! Excellent! I can't wait for your next foray into this type of gallery!!! Thanks!!!!!
Motts... if you ever need a model and are in Vegas...

>_>
<_<
A sheer stroke of genius!!!! Can 'Angel Shoots The Easter Bunny' be far behind?
Loved this album! A bit different from your other work, but in a really good way! Great!
wow Motts, you managed to take all the things that people were reading into your photos and put them on film. Hats off!
Thank-you, Motts and Candace. I am humbled by the beauty of this gallery.
I cannot comment on any one individual photo in this gallery. It's more like reading a book to me ... a complete story of strength, sadness, desparation and lost hope.

Thank you very much, Motts, for delving into a new way of showing off a fabulous Urban Ruin.

Candace, more than thanks to you for freezing your ass off and being the beautiful, tragic person you've portrayed in this set. I'm awestruck by your ability to convey raw emotion without saying a word.

Dash, thanks deserved to you as well for being the unseen.

Wow ... just ... .wow.
Once again, you excel. Thanks, Motts, Candace and Dash.
WOW MOTTS YOU SHOULD REALLY WIN AWARDS FOR ALL OF THESE FAB PICTURES! YOU ARE EXTREMELY TALENTED AND THIS GALERY WAS A GREAT CHANGE.
Those were awesome!!! You should use models more often! =D
Bravo Mr. Motts!!! A very different gallery, I Loved It!! For once I looked at all the new pics before commenting, i'm glad I did!!. I couldn't choose a favorite, every pic was awesome!! Thanks to you once again Mr. Motts! My hats off to Candace too!;-)
Hey Radical Ed, Imagine setting this gallery of pics to some King Diamond music!!!!;-)
I think this shot is amazing. Everything about it works. This whole gallery has really been a great change of pace and look forward to seeing more work like this in the future. I'd have to say this is my favorite from the series.
These pictures are beautiful, it would be great if you make some wallpapers of these pictures
Excellent set Mr. Motts. You have talent, these are great photos. The subject in the photos is beautiful too.
What a lovely gallery, Motts! Lovely Valentines' Day images....Motts-style! :)
Thank you to the genius behind the camera and the goddess in front of it.
Wow...This set was crazy...I didn't think I would enjoy photos with people in them, but you guys proved me wrong. Thanks to the three of you...Great work
wow, im just blown away, Motts, these are amazing...
MR. MOTTS I DON'T KNOW IF YOU VISIT TEXAS BUT IF YOU DO THERE IS AN ABANDONED HOSPITAL IN LAREDO,TX MAYBE YOU CAN VISIT IT AND TAKE YOUR MODEL WITH YOU!!
"There will be rest,
and sure stars shining.
Over the roof-tops crowned with snow,
A reigned of rest,
Serene forgetting,
The music, the music, the music of stillness holy and low.
I will make this world of my devising.
Out of a dream in my lonely mind,
I will find a crystal of peace above me.
Stars I shall find."

This photo make me whip out some of my sheet music...beautiful piece to go with this beautiful gallery. The above poem is by Sara Teasdale and the composer for the song I am now singing is David Dickau...it's a beautiful choral piece...listen to it if you ever get the chance...Beautiful!
Acceptance of abandonment maybe?
awsome motts, just awsome.
tell your modle please that she touched me in her pictures your pictures.
thanks.
Excellent job, my friend. Beautiful shots!
Some of the most stunning and brilliant work I have ever seen.
This set has brought me out of lurking to comment. Verry beautiful work!
This is my favorite gallery of your work. Brilliant!
All I can say is:

I am in total awe of you, Motts.......great job.
And kudos to Candace and Dash.

Thanks for feeding my obsession of abandoned (yet not forgotten) places. It's my therapy.
Motts you are fabulous at capturing emotion.
i loved every picture great work
This picture seems rather disturbing for some reason.
I truly enjoyed this gallery! Motts, you and Candace truly brought out the ghosts from within that facility! It was awesome! Thank you for sharing this site!
This gallery was awesome! I enjoyed my tour here. Placing Candace in these pix sure brought the place alive. Thanks for share!
found your site by accident. sure glad i did. add another fan to the legions im sure are following. thanx!!!!!! was incredible. cant wait to see more!
It's cupid mourning and that green mattress that I'm so familiar with. The mattress has so much history, so much residual memory. Cupid is absorbing it all in, for better or worse, has asked for things that later on in life she my regret. Very, very, chancy stuff.
Motts it was fanciful fun to be able to comment on the thoughts that went through my mind, it gave me an opportunity to comment on the action of the subject and on the feelings that it conjured up. It wasn't necessarily the art of the photo but more so what you wanted to elicit. Just a thot.
Definately do more of these shoots Motts, as you can see, this one is a big hit. Candace does an awesome job.
Great pictures. An idea for a movie, maybe.
Motts,
May I offer some constructive criticism? I like your photography much better without cheesy goth chicks with birdy-wings and lip rings. Thanks.
BTW, I hope she wasn't a local gal. The Noho cops are always looking to bust chops, and they never forget a face!
You did great working with a model. This session and the Studebaker are my absolute favorites.
wow, stunning photogarphy in a place that really sets the scene. this are simply remarkable photographs and a pleasure to view!
If you squint and look closely, maybe zoom in on the picture, it looks like there's a woman hunched over on the bed! The way the sheets are all bunched up it looks like the "body" has wings. Does anyone else see that? And the way the dark shadow resembles the hair from the back of a head. Creepy! I don't usually see these things when other people mention shadows and peeling paint but this one is freaking me out.
Day-um, you must have "the sight," Danny!
I think I see it too! FrEaKiE-nEsS!

Geeze Louisiana Purchase! LoL! :0)
Oh man, you got a FLAME! That makes it 50 to ONE, oh OW! :oD

Damn Danny, now that I go back and look, there IS what looks like some gal with wings! Look at the other pics also, I see her too!
This gallery truely moved me in the sense of the atmosfear that has been created by photographer and model. I have NEVER been left this impressed or affected by any image before, there is just something, eerie, sad and beautiful about them all.
STUNNING. ASOLUTELY STUNNING...
THATS ALL I CAN SAY.
OMG.........NOTHING like this has been attempted anywhere else!! Good Lord, get these pics to a publisher! Any publisher!
My lord...This is just incredable, this whole gallery. The deterioration of the woman throughout the course of the pictures is just amaizing. From bringer of love, to losing all faith and accepting fate....it's just incredable...

Oh, btw, I wish I could model for stuff like that lol
I have never been so jealous of someone's talent in my life.
You took my breath away.

-Rae
someone mentioned it earlier i think, but i think it would be a fantastic idea to have a section of your website with a slide show of the pics and music playing during the slide show. when i look at these pictures, i usually have music on as i go through them, really adds another dimension and feel to already awesome photographs. just something to think about...
i usually listen to The Birthday Massacre or the soundtrack for Thin Red Line by Hans Zimmer.
This gallery was haunting, beautiful, and laced with sadness.
Your photos without people in them have such personality because of your talent at capturing so much in just one shot or taking it at a certain angle.
Having a person in them took them to another level.
Not better, just different.
I love them both ways!
Motts, I am curious though, did you tell Candace what to do in every shot?
Did you have an idea of the emotions that you wanted her to portray for this gallery?
Did she have any imput in her poses or did you tell her what to do for each one?
Thank you for writing your thoughts Ladyhawke... I did give Candace direction on what to do in each shot, and I had some specific ideas on what I wanted some shots to look like or convey, some of it was spur of the moment though. I gave her emotions and poses, although when I try my hand at this again I hope to be more prepared in which direction I want to take the shoot.
Thanks for answering, Motts!
Very interesting!
I am amazed that with all the work that you put into this site. The researching and the traveling to these locations. Taking the pictures and posting them along with their histories. On top of all that, you are still able to find the time to respond to the questions we ask.
May you still have that time when you become rich and famous! : )
Your captions of your photos and the comments by the others on here to them, are like the dessert and night cap to a gourmet meal.
Although...I STILL always leave your table hungry for more!!!
(I promise, I will not put any pressure on you and mention Europe. I just couldn't do that to you : )
So, I'll just have to view the teaser pictures that you have tempted us of it so far on here, as the appitizers to a seven course meal.
Once again, EXCELLENT!
I'm grateful that you are open 24 hours a day for I plan to be dining here quite often! : )
Night prayer of the fallen angel.
"Oh God, tuck me in tonight.
But please not too tight.
For there may be dreams and demons I have to fight.
Til the dawn kisses me awake with her morning light."
Motts - These are absolutely incredible! The emotions you evoke in all of us are amazing! Candice is beautiful. Just curious, though, does she have any modeling experience, or did this come naturally to her? And what does she think about our reactions to her work?
Thanks, Candace has done a few self portrait shoots but she's usually behind the camera. I'll have to ask her the last question when I see her.
When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look, but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.
Teriffic pictures! She's hot! But I hope she took a good long hot shower after running around in that filthy old place like that.. come to think of it I work not 5 minutes from there, always wanted to have a look..
Two Words: SUPER-DUPER
Mr. Motts,
I'm sure that Candace is a lovely girl, but I feel that putting a person into these pictures that you take is a subtraction from your brilliant art. I've been checking into your galleries for some time, and the shots that you have taken until this point are breathtaking...adding people to the photographs takes away from the beautiful desolation of the hospitals themselves. I am a fan of your work, but I hope that this is not an avenue that you continue down.
Thank you for your opinion, future shoots such as these will be placed in a different area all together if I do pursue this direction any further.
I do hope you decide to persue this again. It is one of the best galleries IMO. To put a model in this atmosphere that can protray as much emotion as Candace does puts a whole new, beautifully artistic spin in your photos. I think they are all so very emotional and enticing to view.
These pics were truly amazing, very emotional..You could almost feel what she was feeling and when i saw the last pic, i felt sad and wanted to cry ...Well done to all 3 of you for the magnificent pics !! ...
Truly madly galery... it's very impressive... it's like a story... good job..
AM I WIERD THAT THIS WAS A TURN ON.......?
Fantastic series of pictures. I hope the chances that you'll do something like this again are great.
All in all, a very nice set... the wings bugged me at first, but in later pictures they helped more than hurt. Nice job!
Looking over this again, I feel like this would have been infinitely more effective without the presence of the wings. They just seem out of place with everything else present in the shots, perhaps because they just look a bit cheesy and... fake, I guess. And I think they do a little bit to take away from the poignancy that is otherwise gained from the combination of setting and model.
brilliant.
amaizing
I know I'm commenting a little late on this, but I only found this site recently. All the photos had a similar feel to them so I just thought I'd comment on the last one. The style of these photos are very different compared to what Motts usually does, and to be completely honest I dont like them as much. However, they do suggest a sort of untold story that leaves me intrigued. And even in going in a completely different direction, the same artistic expertise is evident in these photos.
Amazing Gallery!!!!
congratulations to all of you, the gallery is absolutely amazing.
This was absolutely beautiful and emotionally powerful. I have been to the hospital before- I live in Northampton, and I think you captured a lot of its aura in these photos. Your model is gorgeous and very expressive. Fantastic!
when viewing these photos i only resond with compassion to suffering humaity which is crying out for help. i respond wity no fear; only love altruism and undderstanding,
Motts, although this set was so different than what you usually share with us, it was also beautiful! I really enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing another side of your work with us! Candace did a fabulous job, and thanks to Dash as well!
Yes Yes YES the strength and pasion
Wow this is great! I think this is the first time I ever saw this gallery. I love the idea of using a model. Candice was great. You could feel the sadness and desperation of this place.. I just wanted to hold her and let her know she will be ok. I do hope she cleaned up right after being on those dirty old beds though
I absolutely LOVED this series and would like to see more of these types of shots. Candace was awesome and so good at telling a story through expression...your best ever Motts!
1. I can't BELIEVE that I am just now finding this gallery...I saw a few of these shots on google images, and stumbled across this batch while revisiting Northampton today...Happy day!
2. VERY,VERY emotive, man!
3. The blurred shots were WAY creepy ("Scream", Pace", etc)!
4.( I think I've fallen a little bit in Love with Candace!)
No "shrinking Violet", she! Definitely my new fave wallpapers!
Thanx for the wonderfull photography! You Rock!
This is an awesome shot & such emotion in it. With the pose in this, she is knows she is a fallen angel & has been forever cast out of her home. The scratches behind her on the wall, to me, could be her reaching for Heaven & no longer able to get back there.

Motts, you & Candace did a wonderful job with this entire gallery.
