God in heaven. :-(
Oh those things give me the creeps..... I can't imagine lying in one of those, especially being claustrophobic.

Dayam I hope I spelled that right or Lynne'll get me!
EEEEK, very suffocating!
Wow... when I first saw this I thought is was, like, part of the space station or something... O_O
And, for those of you that don't like to wear collared shirts, imagine having something like this around your neck.
OH MY! THAT GIVES ME A DISTERBING FEELING, SO EXTREMELY SCARY!
just think of not being able to breath, the buzz of the pump. the sucking feeling on your body. the hope that air will enter your lungs. the pause, the suction lets off.
your hungry, you have to go to the bath room. the buzz of the pump. the next breath. 24 hours a day. the bed changes, the baths, the buzz of the pump and the next welcome breath.
your chapped neck. your sore body. you can move, you can fight. the buzz of the pump and that next breath.. you try to scream and all that comes out is a soft moan. Your body wasting away. laying in your own filth. the buzz.... I have no idea of how they cleaned up the patient. how they must have had to talk to them to stave off insanity. Being a nurse on one of those wards would be so hard. you would have to give 110 percent or get hard, very cold and hard to just work there. wow, I think I might cry.
I just can't imagine.

sorry that Picture is so awsome I fell into it. I can actually feel what it might be like to lay in it, as a nurse to take care of some one that is laying in it..

brovo.. mr motts. as a nurse there is not much that jumps out and grabs my soul like that just did.
I have md and sleep in the smaller ones called port a lung. I did sleep in this kind at first. they are scarey at first. E-mail me and I can show this one. garfieldhen34@aol.com
YIKES!
i would rather they just kill me off, than have to be in that thing. wow.
wow, that is really disturbing to me, I would be having a serious panic attack!
Where's Mr Frump? 8^]
very erie lonley, scary
I swear this is the fuckin" coolest site ever
Maybe the previous photo was some sort of exhaust for multiple Iron lung thingys.
These are not that scarey! I never wanted them to kill me off. I sleep in a smaller type now, but I have slept in one of these ones. The iron lung sounds like a train a bit when it's on. I have a fuuny story. I was about 8 years old when I was in it. I woke up in the middle of the night to find the collar up to my nose. The lung sucked me in. I yelled NURSE! I heard this story for years and still do. Check out my website http://www.mydisabilitytalk.com/
Hi, Henry! :-)
i was in one of those for nearly a year, my best friend stephanie from the hospital came to talk to me everyday tho, i was 15 and i remember the first night i was in it, the staff actually let stephanie sleep on a cot next to me because i was so scared, the only reason they let her do it was because i was threatining to start screaming, i was already crying which was not good for me since i was frail and couldnt breath very well at all on my own
Really creepy! It looks as though it is expectantly waiting to gobble someone up!
If that doesn't make you claustrophobic, I don't know what will.
That looks expensive.
Google Iron lung: The history of the device is amazing: It saved MANY lives (although the quality of life...) of people stricken with Polio. The modern ones are pretty ingenious. The old ones are pretty horrifying
I said this before... I saw one for sale on EBAY and the seller actually got in it and turned it on. He said it put alot of pressure on his chest.
Can you imagine getting stuck in one of these and calling the fire birgade to get you out?
thats so creepy .

i couldnt imagine having to be in one of those .
love this site!! the most interesting pics. keep up the awesome twisted work

I kind of got the impression of some kind of ventilation "Array" as well. Whether it pulled or pushed or both, I do not know.
is that an MIR machine looks it, ive been in one and it was like being the man or should i say women in the iron mask! creepy!
is that a pillow on the other side, Lynne?
@ Jack. The iron lungs are air tight so no air enters or leaves them this is so that when the bellows is at the closed state, the chamber pressure is higher than outside forcing air from the lungs and when the bellows is at the open state the chamber pressure is lower than outside creating the condition that will draw air into the lung. It works like a human diapragm only using the bellows to adjust pressure not muscles.
@ Maggy. An MRI machine is quite a bit different than this although it does have an Aperture that kind of resembles this. MRI, PET and CT systems all have an aperture and a table used to position the patient in the device.
Somebody must have died in there! Shield your eyes!
