what is the piles of dirt like stuff on the sides???or is it just dirt??
Plaster crumbles from the walls and forms these piles on the floor, more so when there is water dammage.
Did you mean "fifth" or "filth"? I could drink a fifth and pass out in the filth!
Lets give him credit for 5th - there are 5 windows...
It looks as though someone was trying to escape by prying the bars and cages of the windows.
Or break IN. ;-)
It's probably plaster that crumbled. These are amazing.
these photographs are extraordinary....this mistery and darkness in them..it`s something i haven`t seen before. too cool =) i love it
I love this shot, showing the beauty and decay of the walls and architecture. The shape of the room is very interesting.
My old grade school had these kind of windows prior to renovating. They were 'kid friendly" the teachers said. This way they could open the top panes for air (The opened useing long wooden poles with metal hooks on the end to trip the latches) and not worry about children falling out of them.
This must be the same reason why they are here.
This looks similar to the windows from the NSH on the Norwich line - one of the first buildings of the whole campus...built even before the tunnels.
Mott has done some stunning work on this site, but this has to be one of his best. There is an air of finality to this picture, like mental abuse winning, self-apocalypse or something.. It doesn't get any grittier and grimier than this picture!
These photo's enlist the imagination. The photographer did an amazing job.
i went there a few days abo and i kicked open a door and seen that
As with all these pics, it's haunting. Too haunting and too melancholy for me to use as a wallpaper.
I absolutely love all of your work! I've recently visited a few places you've been to. This past wekend I went to Norwich and the security was absurd!! But it made it sooo much fun dodging them! We had to hide in a bush for a half hour while a guard paced back and forth across the road! I didn't get a lot of pictures because we were hididng but it was a blast!

Looks a lot like The Ridges (aka the Athens Asylum, etc.) Another one of those Kirkbride Plan buildings, probably.
Voivod, thanks for sharing the 11-18-08 news article. So many of the aslyums (PA & NJ) are broken into & graffied & damaged by traspassers, teens, adults, satan worshippers....nice to see a reminder as tempting as it might be, it's not worth breaking the law to break in or steal dinner plates for that matter.
