So was that fake marble?
It looked genuine to me.
Amazing! That's so beautiful!
Motts, any idea what this particular area may have been used for. It's stunning. And the floor is pretty, as well.
Beautiful. Marble...tile floors...Motts...are the stairs marble as well? They look it...wow!
It was the lobby for the administration building, and yeah there is a ton of marble in here!
Thanks!
Looks like a mausoleum, but I mean that as a compliment.
It kinda reminds me of a jury box in a courtroom, especially with all that marble.
WOW IN THE OTHER PICS I DIDNT KNOW THAT ALL OF THAT WAS MARBLE, I JUST THOUGHT IT WAS WOOD WITH PEELING PAINT, VERY EXTRAVAGANT!!!
That is a really amazing shot Motts. Aside from the peeling paint and such on the walls the staircase looks almost brandnew.
Hey JAVA, either your caps lock button is stuck or you are really really excited about that marble.
Too funny, Frankie! 8 )
Damn so much marble to go to waste in there, I really hope this hospital isnt set to meet the terrible fate of others
That time gone past when we as a nation used to invest in solid, beautiful buildings, even ones to house the mentally ill...American was really pumping strong back then!
Reminds me of many of our downtown buildings built during the same time period. They are covered in marble all over on the insides. Marble must have been "in vogue" at that time. It is a lost art, that is for sure.
If the same building was to be made today, they'ld use some marblized plastic.
hey Java-turn your caps lock OFF...
THe marble is very beautiful, i'd love to look up close at it. In my kitchen we have it, and there fossils in the countertop, I can only imagine what y ou could find in there!
These old places were so nicely built......and this one really has a lot of beauty.

Java has always liked to "yell" at us with caps on, LOL
The building I work in used to have marble very similar to this covering the entire first floor (walls and floor both!). They decided it was too much work to maintain (because cleaning it yearly was too hard?), so they covered it with drywall. The biggest insult: They did a fake marble finish on the drywall!
Corporate thinking at it's best, sounds like something from a Dilbert comic.
Just beautiful, does remind you of a jury box..
I agree with Rat, looks like a jury box. Great photos Motts!!! Yeah a new gallery!!!!
i was just curious what buliding this was in cause i know where the hospital is and ive visited there and only got to explore the chapel and some kind of basment and a few administration buildings but i dont recognize these pics
Maybe a 'waiting area' as the visitors came to see patients? Just a thought....
they didn't enclose the marble in mesh?

hehehehe
I love this picture! The cool grey mosaic tile floor with the golden marble. Stunning!!
its not so nice when its pitch black in the building and ur only using ur cell phone light to walk around the rooms and the tunnals they have its not what u think its worse why dont u guys go and spend the night there and then tell me what u think about the whole hospital and walk into every room and every building they have and hear mad things moving and making noises. but u have to be quite cuz then the ghost wont come out for u to see them.
yes ive been in here its great but weird things do happen one mineut u walk into a room and its real cold then the next its real hot. but a great place to visit.
wheres some ghost pics
Motts was there a padded room there?
Not that I have seen, nor have I heard from any other explorers that there is/was a padded room on campus. I heard there was one featured on the VH-1 show... I would bet money it was placed there by the film crew.
Thanks again,Mr.Motts for answering all of our questins. " Those Drama Queens".
I can't believe that want to tear such a beautiful place down. : [ i live near this hospital
The color choice and style of the marble along with a federal look to it hints Neo Byzatine styling that was popular in public instituional styles in the 20's and 30's.
Very majestic, eh?
Norwich, I believed tried to make things look as fancy as possible to make patients feel at home and to make visitors feel welcomed. So I've read.
The waste of such beautiful building materials. Thanks for forever preserving them in photos!
the picture is great motts just wish that it was still active
I used to live about 10 minutes away from here and my friends and I were able to break into the facility when we were teenagers --- that was at night and we could barely see anything. You've captured this space wonderfully. There are a few other abandoned hospitals and mental rehab places in CT that you should check out.
How could this poor old building be left there to rot.
I like the coloring of the marble here.
What would be the best way to clean Marble?
That marble is so beautiful, such a waste of a valuable and gorgeous material
They used to just expect that state buildings would be "stately'" back in those days. They also used to build state-owned buildings with an eye towards what it might end up being converted to in the future, very practical.

Very pretty entrance.
