I love those windows!
That was the first thing that caught my eye, too...the marble was next.
Sweet!
Looks like a couple people we know (who shall remain nameless) haven't been here yet. Those windows would all be busted in a matter of minutes.
Thank Goodness for that!!!!!!!!!!!!
seems to be clean, and untouched!!
Clean, crisp shot of those windows. The marble is lovely. Hard to believe it has been closed for 10 years!
This place is so well preserved, i think you photographed this one at just the right time, i just hope they can keep this one in this condition.
Yes, I too noticed the beautiful lattice work on those windows. Nice to see they're still intact.
Wow! what fab windows, the place is in good shape too.
Very cool pic.
Motts I love your stairway shots.....and holy moly those windows are gorgeous. I also hope this building stays in such pristine shape, what a beauty!
Another immaculate, untouched place. Thanks for sharing Motts!
Leaded Glass! just beautious!
Just lovely!
Really neat architecture, photographed very well :-)
WOW! this building is actually NICE!!
This is a pretty pix. Those windows are awesome. It saddens me that vandals could obliterate this picturesque scene in no time. I wish there was a way to preserve these old institutions and make like a museum and as I mentioned before, a skit or drama and charge addmition to tour the place. That would also bring money into the city...I think. I am not very well in knowledge of such things, but that is how I feel.
Oh, yeah, thanks to Motts and others like him, these places are being preserved in another way...photography...and he risks his freedom and his health to bring people like us these awesome photos to share. Thanks alot Motts for sharing.
Beautiful. Thanks, Mr. Motts.
It had class, it had quality, it had imagination, workmanship. It wasn't because they just needed to whip up a warhouse for the retarded or the mentally ill. There was forethought and an idea that they had at the time. To maintain the dignity of the charges who were entering such an unknown. The marble, the glass, big time class and quality.
what a beautiful building! (love the near-security run-in story!)
wow......thats all i can think of to say
These pics are great but the bad part is they are publicity that these places dont need. The pics are posted, some douchbags with nothing better to do find out where they are and go bust the place up. It would be best to post the pics and leave the names and locations out. I cant believe this place hasnt been trashed or burned to the ground yet, dont worry I'm sure it will soon once enough of the wrong people find it.
Was just sent the addy to your site by my son. Gorgeous photographs. We lived in the Norwich/Groton area for 21 years during the 70's & 80's. And, we remember Norwich State Hospital well.
Back in Minnesota now and working to restore all that's left of the Rochester State Hospital... it's cemetery. Over 2000 souls are buried there, only a very few of whom have markers of any kind left. Luckily, an accurate plat of the burials exists. Soon, many of them will be once again identified! We are also searching for the earlier cemetery which had 76 burials. For that, we also have a fine plat of the burials....but very little idea of where that actual cemetery sits. Sadly, all the wonderful buildings were deemed unrepairable and have been torn down. What a sad waste of what were truely incredible buildings....an entire *city* run by the inmates. Even a quarry! I hope NSH doesn't suffer the same fate. We're, as a nation, becoming too easily persuaded to just *get rid of the old stuff and replace it with new, modern stuff*. As a genealogist, I hate that attitude. We're losing our history!
I assume this photo was taken in the Admin building. Too bad they cant open up the buildings for tours.
a very good picture of the windows,.....yeah they need to open it up for tours!!!! where i live which is in Louiville there is a place called Waverly Hills Sanitorium i live right down the road from it they have that place opened up for tours!!
notice the fine mosaic floor
vandals come and go- i worked there and lived there when I was young- i love it there it is peaceful( with exception of kettle bldg) during the time we used to comment that the vandals would not tear up the chapel but sure enough I chased kids away and found stupid stuff written on the walls- I was upset- that was the only place that hadn't been terrorized by vandals--
All it needs in there is a fresh coat of ecru paint and it would be perfect!
Wow it looks so much nicer n the day flashlights jus dont do it justice
thats an awsome picture would love to walk through it
Cant get over the pic here, this looks so similar to the old civil buildings and court house downtown here in Texas, thanks Motts!
I wonder what it looks like today.
Marble and windows are quite amaizing.
Those windows are gorgeous! Why can't more buildings these days have such beautiful designs?
These buildings were truly built with care and individuality back then. I hate these cookie cutter pieces of carp they have nowadays. They could have saved these buildings BUT they have to get them when they first close. 20 years later is too late. I live in AL and I know of a beautiful old 1800's mental institute that is vandalized to the point of being totally unrecognizable.

Question: What is the last letter of the word "hospital"?
