Tornado

Tornado

This image was surprising... it depicts a family in the Midwest fleeing from an approaching tornado. The father is assisting his wife, who is carrying a baby, and young daughter into a shelter, next to an old wagon. A dog follows the girl, as does two boys; one is carrying a black cat and the other cradles a litter of puppies.

It is a very beautiful painting, but the subject matter isn't as peaceful as other images usually seen in psychiatric hospitals. It was signed "W. Courtney", no date.

Looks like an AJAX ad from the 60's
Puddy, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore.
Little information on the painting and the artist... http://www.pbs.org/new...ec98/curry_8-13.html
I LOVE YOU, Sa1amand3r!
THAT is what I have been doing all this time!
I KNEW I saw these prints before!
Thanks, now I know I am not totally insane.
Excellent, thank you sa1mand3r!
I love that print!
Yes, thank you sa1amand3er. I love the painting, and I keep wondering if the poor chicken got saved too!
~Me, let's watch who gets to give you a clean bill of mental health now, shall we? ;-)
Anybody who knows ~Me would not!
salamand3r :) that was really interesting :) thanks
Oh, yes, our staff is very sensitive about the art selection. Nothing that would make a nervous person feel agitated!
I thought that kid had a gun at first...it's the cat.
He's just holding it like, "I'll cover you...GO!"
Lovely art, thanks for the info Salamand3r.
been there, saying good by to everything.
shows what is really important to you.
What a wonderful treasure
I'll get you my pretty and your little dog too!
Is there a price on that one?
I like the print and love the frame

Could see that hanging in my office
i, too, upon seeing this photo, was startled by the obviously agitating subject matter. quite a contrast to a guitar playing gentleman...
it makes you wonder just who the artist was. one of the staff, or even one of the calmer patients trying to hold on to a lost life...if anyone has any info about this plz share.
heh heh gun cat (kudos to Ginsu Victim for making me laugh)
Shyria, please see the third comment from the top on this page.
I wonder why they would chjoose something like this. I had a friend who dis some art for a mental instituion and most of her pieces were rejected because they might be too disturbing to some patients.
Dang! Aint this painting worth some money!!! You should've gaffled it & took it to an apraiser. I got $1,500 for an old raggady painting I found while cleaning a shool's old storage attic. True story! scratches and all!!!
I'm wondering whether it is supposed to be a metaphor for mental illness since it was, and still is to some degree, misunderstood?
It's a TWISTER !!!

Dorothy ! Where's Dorothy ? ! ? !

Signed; an American Soldier stationed in Germany.
This print/picture looks like it dates back to the 1930's depression era. Many prints like this were created to give hope and to inspire people to help each other in turbulent times (hence the oncoming tornado).
I think the meaning of this painting meant that there is danger but if you can get to a safe place you will be alright...maybe.
There was a copy of this very painting in my elementary school in New York City.
Dorothy !!! Where is Dorothy ? ! ? ! ? ! ! !

Fort Lewis, Washington
Wizard of Oz? Separate dimensions , entities?
Pretty horrific.
The poor kid is probably holding the cat like a gun trying not to get his damn eyeballs scratched out... and why is it that back in the day the women folk had to be man handled to get them to do anything intelligent in times of desperation... Geez LOL!!!
w,hy in the world would they put this painting in a mental hospital when alot of these people are already anxietized, nervous, fearful, thats just mean!
Just another image designed to drill into the insane brains of the tortured in order to keep their worst fears alive and well in these public torture chambers....
It looks like a hand made copy. Is it possible that a patient painted it from another copy in a book or magazine ?
the way the boy with the cat is turning...
it looks as if theyre running from the house, not the tornado...
Maybe it brings the message "Life is worth saving?"

Thats's what I got out of it.
