I've always wanted to see a control room like this, however, I fear I'd want to touch too many things and pull knobs and I'd get in trouble or do something bad! :0)
Kind of ironic...

Power on insided an abandoned power plant....

Hmmm.
This looks like something out of an old science fiction movie, as do most of the pictures from this place.
*pushes big red button*

CRASH BANG BOOM

...whoops
Motts, is this REALLY the same place?
Way Cool. Still looks like it could still be in use.....
Yes this does look like it's from some other place! Hey is that rolled up police tape? LOL
Seems so strange to see this kind of control room ... and not a single computer monitor in sight. Now ... /that's/ scary.
It's fascinating, to think that at one time this was the power supply, before everyone raced for Nuclear Power.
That at one time this job took many people to make it run well... Now it's one man, at a terminal.

That is a scary thought.
okay, obviously im not the first to notice this, but why are the lights on?
So you can see where you're walking! I would imagine that at some point, someone who came in this room turned them on & forgot to turn them off...
Some areas of this facility are still in use periodically.
MMMMMM,They still had power going through some parts of the plant....
Cool, an old Star Trek control room ;-)
Motts mentioned that some of the transformers had power humming through them, and I bet the switches with the yellow caution tape tied to them control live switches and or transformers.
Lights on in an abandoned building? That can't be right.
Where's Homer Simpson?
those batteries looked new.. I imagine the lights are powered by the batteries
>Where's Homer Simpson?

You beat me too it, I was going to ask the same thing... he must have gone out for a dougnut!
I have missed this picture somehow, very interesting, do they ever try to recycle the equipment that s left behind??? anyone???....... Buler (ha ha ha)
the area on the right looks like its still in use
I'm a "retired" Power System Operator. Imagine being here in an electrical storm with circuits "tripping" and trying to run back and forth keeping track of all this without computers! I really enjoy this series---glad I stumbled across it!!
I am assuming that the smokestack is still in place. The power to the building would be to light the funny red lights on it. Anything over so many feet tall has to have clearance lights on. It's an FAA regulation.
This is the second time I've seen light's on in a "abandoned" power plant. Creepy!!
Just about every power plant has connections to the power grid that allow it to take in power when the generators have to be shut down for maintainance or emergencies. This allows the facility to keep lights, controls, pumps and other critical equipment operating. Without operating generators, the plant is just another industrial building that uses power from an outside source (but it has some cool stuff inside).

By the way, it is not that unusual to see power on in a seemingly abandoned building. There is hardly any land in the USA that some private entity or local/state/federal govenment is not responisible for. The land is probably owned by some real estate holding company that pays a custodian to check on the building once in a while and keep the power on for security lighting and fire alarm systems, etc.
I finally made it into this place and it was amazing, However the control room has been conpletely re-routed so there are no more active connection inside.
Bri man, I gotta agree with you on that. Places like these control rooms are very temping. But there is a problem with turning just any knob, you don't anything to suddenly explode or have anything go terribly wrong while you're there. But yeah, these kind of rooms are ones that you wish you could play around with sometimes, you probably could. If there's no power left in the controls that is.
Star Wars ... :)
So many buttons and switches....
"Thou shall not be lead into temptation"

Well maybe one switch... what's the worst that could happen? =O
How come the lights are still on?
Interesting to see where the meters were. Looks like loads of meters have been removed. Spare parts used in other stations? Yes, power is usualy keeped connected to moth balled power stations. One diesel power station comes to mind that was built around early 1900's. It was moth balled in the 40's and only a few years ago was disconnected from the grid. It has 2 large slow speed 6 cyl diesels that were made in England. About 100 years old now. They still work. Started up now and then for shows.
Kinda reminiscent of the control room from one of my favorite movies, "The China Syndrome, " although I know this isn't a nuclear power plant like the one in the movie.
Sooooo this is were the Devil Controls his Dirty work from... eeeeeek
Pre UNIVAC days obviously - - and I agree, very very tempting. Would love to poke around in here.
this is to kool, that would be a kool place to poke around indeed.
maybe at some point the owners plan to reopen this plant that or intended to use it as a stand by plant should it someday be needed again. It would make sents to me to
maintain the power in it to keep an eye on the equipment for this reason.
There's no way this kit will ever work again. The boilers will be ruined. The power is on because it's an active building and may still be used as a sub-station.

The cells are to keep the lights on when there's a power failure and possibly also to start a backup generator for local power. If they were the only thing powering the lights then the lights would have gone out a long time ago.
then why would they allow it to fall into disrepair? but then perhaps it is paranormal the lights? i have no other explanations...but if only one could see if the switches still work?
I work in generation engineering and the scary thing is that in my state there are many plants running today that still have control rooms like this. The "New" computerized control in the power industry is cold war era computers.... This stuff is the first generation of controls; ran on compressed air. If you walk in that switchgear, you'll get a few even cooler pictures...
This looks like something from "Star Trek."
where are the workers O.o
