It always amazes me how the old timers could make something this massive and it work, and work so well,
Wow. The sheer SIZE......just amazing.
Yes I agree, I can't imagine how gigantic this stuff would be if you were standing there.
So, Jude, darlin', do you think it would be bigger if you WEREN'T standing there?
The wonders of pre-computerized industry always amaze me. This puts it in such awesome perspective.
Is it a boiler or a condenser below?

In a lot of typical power plant designs, there's a condenser under the turbine - steam is exhausted to the condenser, and the water is returned back to the boiler to be made to steam again....
Believe me, those things are huge!!!!
Awyper, quoting Lynne now? <heehee>
Why yes Lynne, it would! I asked Johnny and he knows stuff. :-)
Yes, Lynne is my hero!
did you ever get scared in the basment when you were a kid of the furnace? well immagine going down to get something you dropped down the steps here. hahahahah
Does anyone know why they used to call capacitors condensers?
Because there are conceptual similarities between electric capacitors and heat exchangers used to condense steam to water, not actual similarities hence the change in name.
Hard to believe you've got me thinking that an old turbine and boiler are now works of art.......but you do!
two words: holy cow. this place is huge!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reminds me of the engine room on an old steamship. (circa Titanic)
This is too cool! : )
my guess is its a condenser as there does not seem to be any flue tubes or a fire box. also it would be odd for a boiler to be in the same room as the turbine. any closeup pics of the boiler/condenser
It is a condenser. It condenses the steam that leaves the turbine.
