Great contrast! I don't think I'll ever be able to shop at this Wal Mart when I visit home. It's too depressing to think about. I don't guess the corporate Wal Mart "big shots" will even put up a plaque or memorial to this sad, soon-to-be gone place.
My local Wal*Mart was once a peach orchard. I can still picture the rows and rows of peach trees.
VERY stiking photo, like it alot.
Hm, I'm in California, but it wasn't the location of the images that drew me to this site. It's the quality of the site, the photos and the commentary that Motts provides. There are a lot of other urban exploration webpages and webpages on the lovely buildings that are falling into decay and to the developer's bulldozer, but I haven't found any that are as compelling as this one. I haven't looked that hard, but I did look a little. I'm one of the ones who begged Motts for an RSS feed, so that I could stay current.

So, attaboy Motts. :)

There are lots of options for forums. I could do one on my site, but the most appropriate place would be here. Motts, are you interested in taking this on? I could help, or I'm sure that there are others here who would be willing to help.
(12:19PM) Puddleboy...there is a chat room set up by Lyric. I don't have the link here at work, but do at home. (we have websense here at work, can't get they-ah from he-yah) I can post it later, unless someone can beat me to it. The real-time chat is cool...A forum would be a very cool alternative, too....*hint-hint*
Neefer, I have visited some of those same sites and wasn't impressed either. I was taken in by this site, as it shows the true colours of a building. Viewing the various gallerys and reading the comments is almost like being there.

I visit this site several times a day (actually more often than I check my email) I don't want to miss a new gallery or a new revelation to one of my favorite pics.
The comments are getting unwieldy, I've been trying to think of a solution. I suppose a forum might help, but the idea of one run in conjunction with opacity.us doesn't appeal to me. It's difficult monitoring all the comments on this site even with help; I am unable to moderate a whole forum.

The problem is that I never expected to have a whole community of people regularly conversing through the comments. I don't mind reading it all but I have to ask myself, is this something newcomers want to read? Would they be uncomfortable posting? I've had equal amounts of positive and negative feedback about the comments area here and I want to make it better.

I envision this website to be a long lasting entity that will document these places in an artistic and historical fashion. Transient conversations about what someone had for breakfast this morning seem to clutter the more important contributions, such as explaining the function of an object or place photographed, or memories from a past employee, things that I feel are more noteworthy and should stay permanently.

I might prune these extraneous conversations from the comments sections when I have some free time; I feel bad but I think everyone knows my intentions are good.

I am open for feedback or alternate solutions from anyone...
Most of the 'off topic' conversation is stale after a few days and should be removed.
some of the more funny comments should be saved like the first light fixture and soap dispenser comment
I do agree, Mr. Motts, that there is a lot of surplus chatter from your more regular viewers. I am hardly an innocent where that is concerned.

Lyric's Chat URL:
http://pub3.bravenet.c...t/show.php/182050583

The only problem with the Chat is that we never know if anybody's planning on going there or not. Lyric kind of hangs out in it when she gets home from work. Amanda's Mom and Tony C. are the usual suspects. We're on the left coast, so usually Lyric or I .. or at times both of us ... are in there after seven in the evening our time.

You ALL are more than welcome to use it, though. Lyric doesn't have to 'open' it. There's nothing to "sign up" for or download. It's just a basic, no-frills Java chat.
Yeah, Motts, the comments are getting unwieldy, and I'm wondering when you'll run out of bandwidth. Also, we couldn't expect you to spend every waking moment moderating the discussions, we need to allow you time for exploration and music, because that's what life is all about.
I agree that a forum approach is a good idea, mainly because I type too slow with 2 fingers to enjoy a chat room.
Just remember, we'll support whatever you do.
I agree with you, Motts and Puddleboy...especially bdhsnake...most extraneous comments can go....but keep the really funny ones..
Here's where this becomes a dubble-edged sword. Some of the 'off topic' stuff is also some of the really funny stuff. Meaning that if I was left in charge of cleaning the site up, I wouldn't know what to do.

My original idea was to remove everything over two or three months old, but then newcomers would never read into the meaning of "Into the pit of oblivion" or "Have another turn". The way it sits now, they can read the comments, and find out what the picture is all about.

Thanks for the chatroom link. I bookmarked it.
Stuff like the light fixture/soap dispenser post have got to stay, but this thread could be deleted next week, and we'd probably never miss it.

Personally, I don't like chat, but that's me.

Oh, and Motts, I think the more of you for leaving the original light fixture comment up. We'll never stop teasing you about it, but perhaps you were only showing your age, or lack there of.
Oops, I forgot to say that I'm a relative newbie, and I didn't think the comments were overwhelming. I found the community here to be welcoming, too. (hugs all around)

Maybe a newbie to the 'web might get overwhelmed, but if you've been surfing for a while, you know how to skip over stuff.
You begin to know where you're welcome and where you're not. I also know of several forums and Yahoo groups that are so full of rules and regulations, you're afraid to say anything.
Motts, take out what's not funny (especially a lot of mine), older stuff, and stuff that isn't relevant to your site. Any removal of my dopey comments wouldn't offend me. For me, your website is therapy. You opened your world to us and we found an extended family...sorry we abused your bandwidth!!! =(
Yeah, deleting dopey comments that are a few weeks old, and archiving pertinent comments in the "extras" section might be a good idea.
Or, maybe you could link to a forum that someone else set up, but you didn't feel responsible to moderate, and you could check in with comments yourself. It could be a free-for-all. Who knows? I just wouldn't want any location or entry information to be given out, that would ruin the concept that you've got going here.

I just wanted to say that this is the most fun I've ever had on the internet without being shaken down for a contribution. For that, I applaud you, because I feel that most subscribers to this site would gladly cough up a few bucks to keep enjoying the photos that you're posting.
Thanks again.
Comment pruning has begun, this photo was first because ironically, it had the most comments... it was reduced from 102 to 19.
prune away, Motts, and don't forget to pop over to lyric's forum
hey do u think even though the building is being torn down that the spirtis will stop haunting the building. Their grave is being destroyed basically. Most likely the wal mart will not have any buisness. It will be haunted and the spirits will have pay back
No unfortunately I don't think a few spirits or some paranormal activity will stand in the way of modern progress. It would have to be one seriously haunted place as in objects flying around and injuring customers on a regular basis for them to close down something like Walmart and somehow I don't think that is going to be happneing anytime soon.
Can you see it now? Flying soap dispensers and light fixture poltergeists.
Wow the plant life outside really adds life to the picture.
Mr Motts, I am a bit late to this Gallery but I must voice my opinion as to the Pruning and re-vamping of the Comments.LEAVE IT ALONE!!!
This is NOT WAL-MART. Add on what U think is necessary but, had all this chit chat not been on here, I'd have NOTHIN' to say. U start cutting stuff out U lose the whole integrety of the site. That is what makes this site so great and appealing is what u've got right here and now. Course, U could join the Wal-Mart way of thinking. Then maybe I'll see U there as one of those "GREETERS" I am so sorry for mouthing off. Pleeze don't take offense at that Greeter remank! Just douldn't help it. It's just that u've got a good (no GREAT) thing here. I'll get off my soap box now. Pleeze don't Bar me!!!
Motts, I know this is a bit late, but I hope you leave things as they are. I am a newcomer so to speak but keep coming back and back. I like reading the comments. If any editing is done, maybe the one or two word comments but certainly leave the lengthy comments, I've learned so much by reading them as far as the history of mental health. And I agree with the other writer that said there are other sites that are similar, but none such as good.
and also, I love the comments on the old machinery by people that either worked with it or have some experience. Excellent!
If you had culled all the comments, I would have never know what a soap dispenser looked like!
I found this site just a while back, but I am on it every day and i am on it at lunch time at work. They think I am morbid lol. I don't care. Most of the comments are interesting...some funny...some unnecessary. But I read em all!
looks like a giant head of brocolli outside the window...
I must agree with Tootuncommon. I am new to the site as well and have really enjoyed the many comments and have learned alot from them being here and I actually feel that I can comment whereas I don't on any other site that I have been on. But I do realize how long that the comment pages can get because I am one of the ones who sit up late reading all of them. So maybe a little pruning may be in order.
