Murals

Murals

The box on the right (electitrcal box?) was painted over to look like a camera, with the photographer ready to shoot. On the right, patients weave on looms, which are actually rotting away in the back of the room.

is that a pig smoking on the left?!
I think it's a cat.
It's a cat with a mouse balanced on it's nose.
Mr. Motts did the patients get to paint the murals, or was this done during construction?
Very nice murels. Wonder if the person who did them is still around? I painted a huge murel on my basement wall many years ago; having to do with the battle of Gettysburg. After I moved, about 13 years ago, I often wondered if it was still there.
rtotten, (if you're still around, lol) I've heard that this mural was painted by a patient a long time ago. judging by the looks of it (the old style camera, the colored tiles which seem to no longer be there, the decript looking paint, etc.), I could say that the "long time ago" claim is a safe assumption.
i was in there the other night, i really fucking love this building, its got the best veiw on long island and in the fasll at night you can see new york sity from the balcony's
THE PAINTINGS ARE SO PRETTYYY<3
Hey! That's rather clever turning the electrical box into part of the painting! Very cool!
THAT IS NO PIG SMOKING LADY VICTORIA.
MOTTS IS RIGHT THAT IS A CAT WITH A MOUSE.
At first glance I thought that was a pig screaming it's head off. (which is how I feel right now)
These murals look deranged. What is up with the artwork found in psychiatric hospitals. It makes me mental to look at it!
Amazed, my guess would be that in some instances they did have patients paint some of the murals, as a form of art therapy. Some of the murals were probably done in themes that the staff felt would be conductive to an atmosphere of inspiration for the patients during art therapy or such. They may seem weird to you or me but keep in mind these were in a therapeutic setting and people did the best they could with what they had.
There are members on here who work in the field that can answer this much better than myself but that's just my guess for what it's worth.
I suggest if looking at pictures like that bother you to pass it by and just look at the ones that don't.
It just goes to show that even people deemed "mentally unstable" were actually very creative and brilliant individuals. Heck, I wouldn't have thought to make the box a camera, so I have to give a lot of credit to whomever painted this.
