Hole

Hole

This hole was created from a preservation effort, although I feel whomever cut it out could've done a better job, maybe take an entire section of wall rather than punch out an irregular shape in the center of the piece.

This scene depicts patients playing ping-pong and chess.

I read the Newsday article on these murals linked on the other page. To me the style is reminiscent of WPA style which was popular in the 1930s and 40s. The Newsday article contains a suggestion they were painted before 1955, so that would fit.
I just wish they could've taken out the whole piece of the men playing chess. I don't understand why they only removed part of it.
They should have done a better job to remove this art. It was done with sledge hammers. I worked @ K.P. now @ P.P.C. Its just sad to see the distruction of not only this but all of the buildings.
We should never have left K.P., it was updated , P.P.C. was a dump and now after well over 600,000,000.00 spent it still is. True and they are spending more.
well a few people in the murral are now head less thanks to construction workers
i love these pictures on the walls... ive been into this building its awsomeee<3
most of my family worked here, my grandparents worked here back in the 40's and lived on the grounds and my grandfather worked in the power house until he retired , I remember seeing this mural when I was a little girl, my mother was a nursing supervisor in this building
Amazing, I'd kill to see this mural in full.
Jo, remind me not to ever get in your way. =8-o
it looks like someone got mad and punched the wall, someone like, oh I don't know.... the hulk?
LMAO YES I HAVE BEEN INTO THIS BUILDING & ITS FUCKIN AWSOMMEEEEE
IT SERTENLEY DIDNT LOOK LIKE THAT WHEN THE CENTER WAS IN USE
For a moment I thought the hole was part of the artwork,(depicting how I feel right now.)
nah really
If the person who cut that horrible hole in the mural calls himself a "preservationist," he should be hauled in for misappropriating a title. It would have been much better to carefully photograph the murals and leave them to the elements. That or take the whole murals down.
You can see a few of them, including the one in the photo, here:

How very sad to see the condition of a once beautiful Facility. My mother worked at KP back in the late 70's as an R.N. Many many people worked there thier whole lives. It and the other Mental hospitals here on Long Island should never have been closed. They provided excellent care for patients and long term employment for thousands.
We Americans place little value on saving the past, in Europe buildings 600 years old are still used to this day. Thanks for the photographs however depressing they are.
Well they did a good job cutting his head off

Question: Is the color of the sky blue or green?
