Looks like that ceiling is about to come down. Motts, again, please do be so careful in these places.
Not to sound stupid but are there any "Kirks" in use today Mr. Motts??
Yes, there are a bunch that are still being used as psychiatric hospitals, including the ones in Independence IA, Danville PA, and Dayton OH.
Take a look at the beautiful ceiling medallion in the top right corner, its partially obscured by the fluorescent lighting that was fitted later.
danville, thats close to me, ill have to go to see the Kirkbride for myself
Oh yes I see that Grifspop, thank you. Yeah this ceiling is looking a little tenuous.....
wow I am new but you take good pics
The one in independance iowa is so surrounded by modern buildings and stuff it's hard to see it. I live in Iowa and pass it alot. They aren't to friendly there so I have never tried to go and look.
hey i am from mason city ia i did not know we had a kirk here! cool i will have to go to independence and check it out sometime! man i love this site
such a sad place. i cant believe these pics. how long were you in there motts? how do u know your way around in there?
I'm brand new to this website and I'm wondering what a Kirk is and what happened to Danvers State Hospital?
Thanks
I found this site last night. I have been looking over and gazing at pictures of hospitals for a long time... especially kirkbrides... this one is absolutely ravishing. After reading the news last night that it was to be demolished, (I hadnt checked in a while), and knowing it was being demolished or had partially been as I read... made me feel like me heart was being burned inside. It is such a trgedy the way people are today and see no beauty in something like this... especially if there is no money to be generated from. And the comment about, creating something we can all be proud if??? What was this man thinking? How could you not be proud of this castle? Taking it's onlookers and people all over by storm... attracting seekers and ghost hunters from all over. It hurts me, personally... Hospitals like this one have been a hobby of mine for a long time and they're haunting me really. it really saddens me deeply that I will never get the opportunity to be touched and step foot in this building... as I have often dreampt about it, and many others...
Oh! And of all the photos, I have looked at.... WoW! To the photographer,You are truly an artist... you have a way of presenting such a unique perspective... showing it, in a way that others refuse to see it as... so to speak. To admit, it's beautiful...
Terra, I'm with you. I have always known about Danvers, but hadn't realized till I found this site late last night that it had been bought and ruined. I was up till 4am looking at these pictures and feeling like someone had kicked me in the stomach. How incredibly sad that they are gone.

If anyone is still on here, can you tell me the state of affairs as of Sept 2006? Has anyone got any pictures of what they left? I get the feeling it isn't much, just a shell of the main building, someone said.

It makes me sick...this was acres and acres of untouched history - medical and cultural and architectural. "Avalon Bay" (what a pretentious name) should be ashamed. I hope the condos are haunted as hell!!
Does anybody know if there are Kirkbrides in the western side of the states?
There were a few in Minnesota, Fergus Falls might be the only remaining one. There were Kirkbrides in Missouri, Kansas, Indiana, and Illinois (Independence and Clarinda State are still an operating Kirkbrides in IL) and the Cherokee State Hospital Kirk is being used by dept of corrections in Iowa.
SPrat some fabreeze, add some non-lead latex paint, maybe a throw rug and an air mattress? and hey, you're set! Oh and don't forget a generater, cell phone, etc...
Yeah... I can't imagine what type of assholes or people would actually go live there on those grounds... and so on...
danver state is cool my teachertold me that she has gone there on holloween and she went around the left wing across the cort yard and they had to hide from this guy that was pulling a cofen and they were so sacrd ogm that is so cool
in my High school classes I have to do somthing and we have to walk around the graveyard and take notes on what we do.
Then we go in and walk around the building
Thanks for sharing that.
Whatever
