Shower Heads

This room reminds me of a slaughterhouse.

Funny, I had a similar thought. I thought about people using the pipes to hang themselves. Also puts you in mind of a room where people might be gassed, even though I am sure that this did not happen here. Disturbing feeling looking at this, isn't it?
Doesn't it just make you want to turn to a life of crime, though?
It's so clean!
I don't like this one, it does have the feel of those gas chambers, doesn't it?
This place could be reused for the benefit of the tax payer.
Interesting tension braces and turnbuckles on the ceiling. What is so heavy above this room?
Water Pipes

Uhm yah, I can see the pipes. As I said,

This is why I love this site - I had never even heard these terms until just now. :-)

Mathue, since I don't know what you are referring to, could you tell me which is which in this pic? Also, as you obviously know something about building and architecture, what is it in this pic that tells you that these are supporting a heavy load? It's interesting to me that you can tell that just from looking at this picture.
Christ, it looks just like belsen.
yeah all this reminds me of concentration camps.. these showerheads don't look like showerheads... but GAS
or maybe they're just screwed out.. who knows.
Lynne,
to answer your question about the tennon and turnbuckle, if you lok behind the closest shower head you will see two painted rods that run paralell to each other, the oval pieces connecting them are the turnbuckles. The rods are threaded, one with a left hand thread and the other with a right hand thread, when the turn buckle is turned it increases the tension on the rods.
The tennons are the blocks between the rods and the ceiling, when the tension on the rods are increased it puts an upward pressure on the floor above.
They look to have been there a lot longer than the shower and sprinkler system and are probably there to support a long span or a sagging floor, but that is just speculating without really knowing what is above this floor.
Just wanted to put up a link about someone who got killed stealing copper wire from an abandoned building:

Oh, and Happy Holidays to everyone, too.
Good grief! And happy holidays to you, as well, Grifs!
Thanks, Twug, and everyone on this site, I have been out of town for a few days and I'm just now looking over the immense number of comments that I missed.
happy thoughts. happy thoughts.
Better not drop the soap
Thanks psychadellic one! I think you answered Lynne questions (about my question) quite fully!
a place I wouldn't want to be
It looks kind of like a cooler in a slaughter house that a side of beef would be hangin' from. Or maybe a side of MAN????
Long drop from the shower heads.
Wonder what it felt like.
That might have actually taken your mind OFF your problems for a while.
During its heyday, who turns the water on - inmates or guards?
I can only imagine what went on in this room -
im loling at the fact that right above the showers are fire extinguishing heads. crap, why have that there when all you have to do is just turn on all the showers?? that or have a big enough 3 to 4 foot pool and just get your bath that way.
oh, Grifspop, i tried looking at the link you posted and it came back invalid. anywhere else where i can find that story sir??
lots of fights occured here ,a couple bars of prison soap wraped up in a towel did the trick.
At first glance I thought it was some wacky gym :--P
