it is a very narrow door. However, in some of the very old jails. Department of Corrections didn't have humane guidlines as to how big a cell must be.
Often, all they contained was a cot and barely room to walk past it and out the cell door.

First glance I thought the red was dried blood or something similar. Also, it seems it's pretty scattered and messy for a prison cell. I wonder what everyone did, and if...no there probably WAS some innocent souls suffering in silence (or not) in there....

It was only a county jail, not maximum security or a long term facility.

A county in the USA consists of a bunch of towns; this particular county has about 20 or so decent sized towns to contribute to the prisoner population here.
