Most Santanists display the pentagram upside down
I wonder what parental reaction of this was when their kiddies first saw it?
Yeah; they most certainly don't make murals like that anymore...
Most Santanists display the pentagram upside down

The Pentical/Pentagram of the "SATANIST" is also drawn with the points on the outside of the circle, Satan is a christan entity that was made up by the church to keep their people at church and not to stray..
why is it when people see a pentagram they automatically think it's the sighn of something satanic?

sage
"Most Santanists display the pentagram upside down "

Actually, when it's displayed with the star pointing upwards it's known as a "pentiCLE" It's used as a symbol in Wicca, and other Earth based religions. With the point down, it's a "pentaGRAM" and it's used in Satanism.

Not too big of a deal, but it just irks me to no end seeing the terms confused/misused.
Many individuals and orders up to our time have used the pentagram. The Roman Emperor Constantine, who converted to Christianity, used the pentagram as his personal sigil on rings, amulets and seals.
The pentagram has also been used and related to Christianity. Up to the medieval times, the five points of the pentagram represented the five wounds of the man they call Jesus Christ and the Holy Cross. The symbol was always mend to be a symbol of goodness, and later used to represent the four elements and the Spirit of mankind.
Well then Shytownmofo you have just taught us all something then, and that's what's great about passing on what we learn, thanks for the info! So don't be irked, just keep teaching what you know..... :-)
"why is it when people see a pentagram they automatically think it's the sighn of something satanic?"

Actually, it wasn't the penticle that made me think of this being "Satanic." It was the altar with the demon head, the robed 'priests' and the obvious female sacrafice. The penticle was kind of secondary, there.

I don't think the person who painted the mural was really all that up on his Occult Mythology and Symbolism. Eh, either way, it's not something I'd expect to see on a "kid's" ride. Which is why I come here, right? To see that which I don't expect to see.
Actually, most Satanists (LaVeyan anyhow) don't usually refer to their symbol as a Penticle/Pentagram at all, they call it a Baphomet.
Baphomet? Isn't that the name of a demon? Sorry ... I'm severely falling behind in my "Satanic Bible" school teachings.
Thanks, Shytownmofo, for the info. As a Wiccan we use the 5-pointed star (with the top point facing upwards) for many things, but true there is alot of confusion.
"Actually, most Satanists (LaVeyan anyhow) don't usually refer to their symbol as a Penticle/Pentagram at all, they call it a Baphomet"

Actually, I do believe the Baphomet is an upside down battle axe.
"Baphomet" is the name of the the goat-headed Satan in the pentegram-symbol of Satanism.
looks like the cover to my slayer cd...hell awaits you...
Is everyone forgetting the true picture here. I love the fact that it looks like a crude hand painting that had no specific design other than letting a 'so called' artist go around and paint something scary without any thought of consequences of what was being displayed or who sees it.
Great capture Motts
I agree with Pete. First I thought it an interesting comment on how society has changed since this mural was created, but this place didn't close until 1996. Satanists and Christians, anyone would be offended by this scene! The fact that it's inside an amusement park ride makes it even more bizarre. This pic makes me laugh and get kinda queasy at the same time.
I agree completely with Pete.I love this kind of simple cheese art.I mean you get some highschool kid and just tell him to draw something scary and this is what comes up.I don't take this picture seriously at all.Now if you want to see some scary and disturbing ones look at the Pennhurst pictures or any of the other abandoned asylums, thats where the disturbing stuff is.
I remember a saw blade spinning and getting ready to cut a guy between his legs.
"Baphomet is the name of the the goat-headed Satan in the pentegram-symbol of Satanism."
No it isn't. The sign used by Lavey satanism is called the sigil of baphomet and is not related to satan at all. Lavey decided to incorporate the sigil by influence of the Occulstist Eliphas Levi.
The whole concept of Baphomet is not known with certainty but it's never related to satan or a representation of satan.
One last thing, Satan was not invented by the christian church.
P.S: This drawing I guess is supposed to create a horror-like atmosphere to the people of back then, which in my guess were mostly religious. What a way to start a ride don't you think?
OMG, ok im a wiccan, 3rd generation.. here is a link for everyone that will help explain all about wicca and penticles etc etc etc www.bewitchingways.com... knock yourself and become informed.
btw awesome pic motts...
Why would they put a painting of satanism in an amusement park? That's strange, cool ,and a bit disturbing at the same time.
No one ever made a fuss over this and that mural has been in there since the early 1970's when I first rode this ride.
this is the best ever
Am I the only one who finds this familiar yet so disturbing....I love it
I remember in this room there was a guy on a table and people around him and there was a saw that was going in between his legs and you could hear screaming

ahhhh happy childhood memories
Dont like this one reminds me of Satan
Great find Motts!! This pic really shows how much times have changed. People would absolutely flip if this was painted in a ride now. Amazing!!
its scaryer seeing it in person
Actually, Lavey considers any pagan religion to be Satanic ("The Satanic Witch"). So does Aleister Crowley, the real father of Satanism. I've dabbled in various religions from Christianity to Satanism and many pagan religions in between. Let me just say that every department has there own belief of what this symbol is or means and nobody can claim to know which idea is right (Or who invented Satan) unless they were there back when it began. If anybody was, I would like to hear about it.
God. this ride was never scary. not even when I was a kid. Made a good place to get a little amorous (in a jr high sort of way) with a date, and also to sneak a few puffs....
I think that is "satanic". naked woman is an altar in their rituals..
But the picture is cool.anyways :)
did you really walk through that thing???!!!
I cack my pants at the sight of a ghost train, let alone actually approaching one!
You brave brave people!
ho, ho, ho... iguess it takes a certain frame
of reference to find this picture hilarious.
stuff like this ALWAYS snuck through the culture of the late 70's, kids were allowed to use their imagination back then. mom and dad actually didn't intefere with ther kids' fantasy lives as much. usually batshit crazy stuff like this doesn't survive this long!
and some more history on tghe pentagram.... When the five-pointed star is pointing upwards, it symbolizes god over the earth. It is interesting how this would be shown with a satanic cult sacrifice of some sort, as you could say it is a paradox. Traditionally, devil worshippers see the upside-down pentagram as Satan over earth.

Lynn, any thoughts on the subject? it would also be nice for some backup, here!

god it feels great to be back.... lol
the pentacle (point upwards) has nothing to do with satanism. it represents the five elements - earth, air, fire, water and spirit. in wicca, only the quarters are invoked (spirit is sort of taken as read). you won't find pentagrams in wicca or paganism - satan is a christian conceit and, for pagans, is as far removed from the belief system as god.

happy solstice, btw.
Third generation Wiccan? LOL
Anyway what do you expect from the 70's? political correctness?!?
One last thing, Satan was not invented by the christian church.

Who invented it then? Its a pretty sick concept.
I can't believe that this hasn't been vandilized. It probably has been by now. When I tell you...there isn't one wall that hasn't been smashed of sprayed on.
Just like surly girl said.

Actually a Penticle is the 5 pointed star with a circle around it. The Pentagram is just the 5 pointed star.

That has nothing to do with evil, satanism or devil worship.

The inverted Penticle or Pentagram IS a symbol of satanism.

Those of us who are Pagan or even neo Pagan don't believe in the concept of satan.
Who had the contract for this place? The local high school? Well, I never...
I always thought the pentagram was to keep the devil away. Was what I heard.
When ever I got on a road like this i'm always too busy looking at my shoes to notice their uhh .. beautiful murals.
elke, i think your part right , i have heard there is a simular marking that is used to ward off evil or something to that nature.
when i was a kid i dreaded that ride ..we made it a few weekends a summer to go there ..and i loved that place...way better place then six flags .you used your imagination more i guess back then ..it wasnt so sugar coated like now ....so many memories as a kid ..oh and it was a ride ..you never walked through it probably 4 to 5 minutes ....good times ...oh and there was a saw involved in the picture if you look closely you can see where it hung through the ceilling that use to spin really fast as you took the corner...
Please keep the topic on Rocky Point, not religion. Thanks!
da gurl gettin killed is hott!
maybe they didnt just go through bankrupcy but also some other matters
I think public entertainment tastes also contributed to it's closing. Traditional parks like Rocky Point and Whalom Park are a thing of the past. The rides are considered tame for today's kids, they want to 250 feet stomach dropping coasters like at Six Flags and the big theme parks.
This happened in my neighborhood. This painting wasn't there when the park was open. After it was shut down, a group of local satanists inhabited the main room, and turned it into a meeting place of sorts. Neighbors figured it out eventually, and when the police finally came in, they found a bunch of sacraficed neighborhood cats. Yikes. Terrifying to have that happen in your own neighborhood.
Josh,

My guess is that Satanists weren't involved at all - they are not that stupid or public or, ironically in most cases, that cruel. The much greater likelihood is that some bored asshat teenagers got together and tried to be cool and tortured some innocent animals because they weren't as smart as the animals and were a tad envious. Check out the lack of evidence for ritual Satanic abuse as investigated by the FBI: http://www.rickross.com/reference/satanism/satanism1.html
The drawing was there when the park was open. I've never heard of any sacrificed cats. I doubt the truthfulness of this post claiming cats were sacrificed. At best, its neighborhood urban myth.
Hi just saw the site here, love it. When i was a kid i was terrified of this ride, and didnt like it much as i got older, but was utterly fascinated by it. I only remember one time going in the house as an adult. I have some questions.

-Anyone remember a very fat lady? I think she was right before the old lady in the chair.

-What did the owners do with the things they took out of the house? Were they just thrown out? Id love to know what happened to the viking.

-Were the contents of the ride actioned off with the ride? In other words did the winners take the figures out? I remember the whole duration I went the woman on the saw mill. I used to think it was a guy.

Finally, The viking was originally in the second floor hallway I believe, but what happened to the dragon with all the body parts? Anyone remember that dragon eating the guy?

It was kind of a ghastly ride. :)

Thanks, Al
Kinda reminds me of the Rush '2112' album cover!!!
yes I used to love this ride......it wasn't scary at all!! Especially when the car would whip around a corner and crash through a set of doors. The Whalom Park Fun House was even cooler.
Choose now - Tupperware or death!
That's a wiccan sign, not a sanist sign, there's is an upsidedown cross, not a petagram.
*Sigh* Thank you, Lynn my dear, for the most intellligent post about the images here. Thank you Motts, Sir, for reminding people to keep it about the pictures.
That's old school horror!
THAT IS DEFIANTLY A WICCAN PENTAGRAM IF IT WAS POINTED DOWN IT WOULD REPRESENT THE HORNS AN HOOFS OF SATAN AND/OR THE GOAT WHICH IS WHY THE GOAT IS A POPULAR AND IDEAL SACRIFICE AND BESIDES THAT, GOATS HAVE THE MOST BENIFICIAL AND FOOD ALLERGIE SENSITIVE MILK!!! LOL hAD TO THROW SOMETHING LIGHT HEARTED AND WIERD IN.
Yes, it is Wiccan, but this was all made for estetic purposes.
Motts himself said to stop the religious comments.
So I advise you do.

This is a really cool shot.
The tracks look horrid lol.
Hey,Motts. I really love abandoned amusementparks,i like in Australia so there isn't many but years ago early 80's there was on in queensland on the gold coast called Magic Mountain. It was at on stage a full size castle and amusement park but went broke .Homeless moved in and set horrible traps for people(scary shit)went on there after dark.Satanists took over the castle which was prime realestate with beautiful views up and down the coast. Motts i love your shots, they generate great conversations your by far now my fav photographer ,were so lucky to have you .thanx. dg ...
thats sickkkk!!
I THINK I REMEMBER THIS IMAGE IN THE HOUSE. WAS THIS ADDED LATER ON LATE 80'S OR EARLY 90'S. IT IS PRETTY SINISTER .
Is that Ozzy under the hood on the left? ;)

Seriously, what a crappy painting; probably made by a couple of local high-school yahoos, using their heavy metal album cover as reference material.

They painted the symbol wrong (upwards instead of inverted), and look--the lines aren't even straight! :)
The pentagram is the wrong way, it should be upside down, as for the rest of the picture, definitely depicts a Satanist!
I think why they added it was because comics were very popular in the 80's. They would sometimes use the symbol in their comics, and make it into something else. Take Manga and Anime for example. They used the Star of David as a symbol of magic, which idk why. As in matter of fact, I'm actually open to all beliefs. I have to agree that they should of never made it look like that the Wiccan's are the bad ones! Who ever it was must of been a pure Christian, and must of really hated Wicca. For that matter, they should of never painted it, cause think about the children!
How freeky is that scene?
again why don't they make rides like this anymore?
modern horror sucks....
THEIR NOT CHRISTIAN?!?! WAHHHHHH!!!!!! LMFAO!!!
