ugh, i cant stand the brick/flagstone combo.
it does look hideous in photographs ...

but really, in person? It's beautiful.
euth: Mr. Motts photos are so very sharp. I can clearly see the beauty in the contrasting colors The red brick is disruptive but intriguing...A similar stone structure can be seen on Blackwells Island in NY. The picture I saw was of a lighthouse-when i saw it , it put me in mind of Mr. Motts photos. I wish Mr. Motts had another location (Blackwells Island)...hint, hint :-}
Hey, Renwick is on Blackwell's Island! There isn't much left on that island though, except for Renwick, the lighthouse, and part of the old New York Insane Asylum, usually called "The Octagon", which they are renovating into million dollar apartments right now.
Yes, Mr. Motts! Thanks to you I've been looking into places such as Blackwell's...I thought it was named after the builder, Maxey?
I looked at articles about the "octagon"... those new structures are really, really gross :-(
The red brick looks like a fresh wound on the stone.
I love the color contrasts, it gives the building personality.
the buildings almost have personalities of their own .. not to mention the "help" from the facilities still in use .. My favourite client ( we were never allowed to call them patients) was a woman named Karen .. who loved to pee in her purse and throw it out the open window at someone on the sidewalk.

I love the brick and flagstone .. I guess growing up around the buildings and then later working there left a soft spot in me for it, especially now that I'm living so far away.
The enormity and stark entity just blows me away. The setting sun, the feeling of power and the loss of. Great pic.
Ive been up there recently and the fire escapes seem like they keep repainting them simmilar to how they do that with school's. Im just wondering if the city still has some minor maintenece to the building.
this bldg was where employee's lived. the main bldg housing patients had no out side fire escapes I worked on ward Salisbury 1. the admission ward
looks like a baby Buckingham palace
