Behind Bars

Behind Bars

There were two or three unboarded windows which gave an interesting view of the massive wing...

U CAN JUST IMAGINE BEING A POOR SOUL
CAGED IN HERE FOR YEARS WITH THE SAME
HAUNTING VIEW..........
never bored by the "looking out the barred window" shots!! Never do they fail to send shivers up the ol' spine....
Very cool picture Motts. The tree on the right and the light behind the building look so surreal.
(The light) as if its the last time the sun sets for you...
...Poor caged soul...must have been horrible!
amen to that
i' was patient here in 1997 it is haunt place, i remember looking out those bars.
Are you sure? Most of the building burned down in 1991...
EVER THINK MAYBE THIS PLACE IS TRUELY THE REASON WHY PEOPLE BECAME MORE INSANE THAN THEY REALLY WERE?
what is the diffrence from prison
Given that a large percentage of the people in the correctional system have tried desperately to get themselves transferred into the mental health system I figure there must be at least a shade of difference.

I can think of a good way to find out for sure, however.
lol love that comment lynne =)

Good photo, sorta scary in a way, but not. At least they had windows, and a view. And it wasn't like the bars were huge.

Possibly they might have even gotten to go outside, at least bfeore underfunding became (once again) a problem.
its ok, theres bars at the window "but their only small"
Love this shot! It capures it all.
this place is awesome we want to go there for halloween night...that would be sickkkk<3
how did you guys get in there?!
Great, there's one day I can't be there.

;)
Perhaps losted is one of the orbs speaking to us from beyond? He/She seems to frequent a lot of the facilities captured on this site.
Ok if that was for an insane asylum then wouldn't that mean big thick steel doors behind you to lock you in?... What if the spirits didn't want you viewing their home they died in..
You might want to watch and make sure they dont slam any doors on you i've seen it happen... *BAM*
I'm back lol i meant to also add this one doesn't creep me out nearly as much as your basement and parlor photos and all that. You should be nomineed for best photographer
If any of you would like to know of a way in there, i have been in there before... many times actually! so if you'd like to know how to get in there or possibly meet up and go for a little tour of the place, i would happily show or tell you!

Just shoot me an email
But you gotta admit, with that many windows, imagine the beautiful views you would get from that hospital. You could probably see boston! The crazies probably loved the fact they can see for miles!
"Crazies" vs. "people with psychiatric illness"

"Crazies" -> hurts and stigmatizes people
"People with psychiatric illness" -> describes people

There's more to it than "just" being politically correct.

Now, back down off the soapboax. Just a warm holiday thought. :-)
Crazy is an easy blanket term for anyone who appears to not conform with the norm :)

"We must all conform"
"We must all conform"
"We must all conform"
"We must all conform"

Boy, I've had too much turkey tonight, or maybe it's the wine?

Or maybe I'm not conforming? ;)
You're not conforming...
yea thats scary
If I was walking around the exterior taking pics etc and saw you standing in the window I would have literally lost my mind LOL :)
My uncle lived there for ten years. He was visited by my family frequently, but I was never allowed inside. (Too young...kids not allowed in...) But yeah, pretty freaky. Probably made his illness worse.
This Building need to be fixed the right
It is sad to see the hospital in this condition
my father was the chief supervisor at Worcester State for twenty five years. I was
born on the property at 269 Belmont st in
1920 and lived there 18 years I roamed every
inch of that property inside and out. The
patients weather permitting were taken out
for walks .Some were on parole status
they could go to the city and roam Front st and Main st or any where in the city. I was one of the two alter boys to serve mass there, for
years. Also went to the movies on Mondays
there was so much good done with research
then .....................A lot of it was crude but so
was life at that time..
i just don't understand why don't they fix this place up and keep it as a muesum maybe or something to remember by. . . why are they going to tear it down. . . my aunt use to work there and she told me stories that i want to go in there but therrs no way in.. .
They're tearing most of it down to build a new inpatient psychiatric facility.
this gives me a feeling of deep isolation.
As far as the eye can see........
i go here all the time. in fact, i went today. they're tearing it down. all that's left is a little bit of this section, but when you look out this window all you see is piles and piles of brick. sad
know a patient there today ! How can this be if building is "closed/abandoned"
I am amazed at its size. What a fun building to explore. What a life you have, Motts! I'm extraordinarily jealous!
Absolute horror. Purification by flames is maybe why there was a fire. I thought it strange that the sink next to the Barber's Chair looked new and nice and clean and everything else looked old, very eeerie. Is this not almost the same treatment of the victims of the Holocaust and Concentration camps? Science sometimes has it's fine lines on what we humans deem proper or in the name of the human conditon.
I remember seeing those bars on all the windows outside when I was a kid...all these pictures of WSH really do capture the sad and sombre tone of this place. It makes one wonder what the patient was thinking and feeling as he/she was looking out beyond the bars.
after reading old charts I found that many patients were put in these facilities for:

having baby unmarried
stealing
rape victims
"hysteria" (PMS now)
any level of brain damaged child
