get real.
Great shot! I love the softness of colour in this. I would have to think that this room must be a lot larger than it appears to be in this photo.
A THEATRE! YAY! WOW I LOVE THIS THEATRE. IN THE OTHER PICS IN THE OTHER GALLERIES OF NORTHAMPTON OF THE THEATRE, THE DETAILS OF THE LEADED GLASS, THE WOOD WORK, AND THE CURVE OF THE BALCONY IS SO BEAUTIFUL. I LOVE THIS THEATRE!
its good to know they didnt spend all their time locked in their rooms. At least they had some entertainment
christina, you sulky sow, I think you need someone to help get that bug out your butt, darling! *serious rolling of eyes in your general direction*
the red line was the divider between the men and the woman. woman on the right and men on the left. we had many fun christmas pagents there and watched many movies to.
By far the best part of the building is the theater
Hey, isn't that where they performed public ECT so the staff could get a kick outta the "inmates" convulsions...

Sorry I don't really mean that, I just had a sarcastic moment...

Really, poor taste sorry :-(
LST69, you are really cracking me up, now. 8`-)
This was taken in the balcony. Behind you was a grand old organ at one time. It was taken away before the whole place fell into total disrepair. There was always a light on in the room to the right of the stage, knew not why. I had a toke while I was taking a break one night and was filled with awe and a few good rushes.
nice theatre, i'd watch a play from here! lol
hey I just stumbled across this site and I wanna say it's amazing =) Me and some firends took pictures here a couple weeks ago. Those chiars in front of the stage... we put em there so sit down in front of for a picture haha things were HEAVY.
The previous pictures didn't show much evidence of the edge of the mezzanine being blocked off. It looks very odd, to me, to see a balcony like this with no edging. It's almost pulling you forward into the room, thanks to the perspective.

The curve of the mezzanine is also very aesthetically pleasing.
Fantastic and beautiful photo! But a STRANGE looking balcony. No railing?
MJ, If the red was used to seperate the men from the woman, why didn't it go all the way up on to the platforms?
I was arrested with 4 of my friends B and E'ing at the state hospital about 12 years ago. The theater, the last room we saw before going to the station looked a little diffrent. It still had it's long floor to ceiling black velvet curtains on the stage. When I ran my hands down them they disintegrated between my fingers. We saw alot of strange things that night. Lights on in the tunnels, we found paperwok of treatments of patients long gone. Leters to staff from family, etc. I will never forget this place. H
ive seen a few theaters in these places but what did the ppl watch if they were in these places because ppl thought they were nuts come on really think about it!
Darice,

Does being legally insane mean your eyes don't work?

How about you try thinking about it. :)
I don't believe the stripe is there any more. The same for the chairs. They have really come along with cleaning the place out, although there were still several abandoned pianos in the stairwells...
it seems as if all mental hospitals have the same design for theaters
i dont think the Stripe was to separate the men from the women. It looks as if it was a runner of some sort that went all the way down to the stage.
Like a super cheap red carpet.
well yeah there eyes work smart alic but if your insaine and on drugs 24 hours a day what type of consantration would you have and what the hell would they show ??
I remember being in the theater as a student in psychology. We observed patient interviews by the psychiatrists and noted the patients' behavior and responses. Seems so long ago now.
The organ now resides in Holyoke Community College, if anyone wanted to know...
