This may actually be a bedroom. Where I work there were so many people who lived there at one time (WAY over capacity, like almost everywhere else back in the "old" days) that a single bedroom was considered the height of luxury, even one this small. It meant privacy, which was very difficult to get.
As much as what Lynne says makes a heap load of sense, and if I were put in that position, I would no doubt appreciate the privacy (Kassie does not play well with others.) I think this small room would make me more anxious, and more likely to freak out or have mood swings at any given time.
or it could have been calming kassie, i know that alot of people who where instutionalized where actually freaked out by huge open places.
Lynn, I see your name and info peppered all over the site. Where did you work again, that you are so knowledgeable? I worked with the MR/MH population, but I have never been exposed to anything anywhere near as creepy as the places Motts has photographed.
You've probably seen it scrawled across a few bathrooms as well, but I was fairly desperate for a date at that period in my life. ;-)

I've worked in California, Indiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and Washington in hospitals, institutions, group homes, foster care, private homes, nursing homes, universities, and school systems. Oh, I also worked at several bars and restaurants and I was a Kelly Girl for a while, although I can't type for jack. :-( Always moving on, always one step ahead of the law and the pitchfork-carrying lynch mobs. ;-)
Wow Lynne that's quite the resume! I guess the closest you were to me is when you were in Washington.....I'm in Alberta.
Anyone know what the "door" at the top right of this picture is for?
HVAC! :-) Heating, ventilation, and air conditoning!

I always remember seeing the hideous slime creatures from hell hiding out in these HVAC crawl spaces in all the swell old sci-fi movies, so I am afraid to say that if I were ever trapped in one of these rooms, I would seriously think twice about trying to shimmy out via one of these, because I KNOW what's waiting for me in there. 8`-)
Whats with the remote control on the floor?
Judging by the cord hanging from the wall this place might have had bunk beds that bolted/hung from the wall.
MMM!!! Home sweet home!!!
Ive noticed those large rectangluar, what looks like metal, boxes? in the upper corners of the rooms. what were those for? they look they open up, to like a circuit box but that can't be right at all.
I believe they are vents for the heating system.
About one and one-half lifetimes ago, when I was going to college in southern Minnesota, I rented two rooms in the upstairs of an old mansion. One was a kitchen about 12 X 12 feet, a small walk-through closet and a very small bedroom. If you took the room above, and put the doorway on the opposite side and paneling on the walls, you'd have it. There was enough room for a twin bed, a dresser, and a floor lamp.
Fortunatly, there were two huge windows in the right-hand wall. And the sweetest litttle-old-lady landlady - who helped keep me fairly sane through 2 years of school. After 6 years in the Navy, it was tough for me to still, pay attention, and keep my mouth shut.
