Mmmmmm . . . . . NICE black and white shot. The way the boards are lined up over top of the door gives the impression of a windmill. I like the open doorway WAY back in the scene to give an incredible feeling of depth. The kicker is the way the light spills across from the right of the picture down across to the left corner. Very complex, very nice!
Quite a scary basement... Looks like something from a horror movie... NIce shot.
I think I actually see something on the floor all the way at the end... kinda like a body being propped up on its front arms.
Good framing :)
it looks like one of those mirror shots that go on forever, way cool
seriously my inspiration. your the reason I want to be a photographer.
The photography and infiltration is fantastic. Lest we start thinking badly of this place: Remember, this was a tunnel build of hard labor to find an ends to a means.... think of the man hours needed to build this crypt.
Now a days we do not worry about architecturally sound buildings or basements. We don't have foresight, nor commitment--our builders see fractual and cheap housing... Plop a structure on dirt and someone wiil materialize to buy it. Sad to say, D'at the trut! As we evolve, we digress.
Remember, what we see here will be gone soon. it is through people such as Mr. Motts that we can see architechure that wiil be one day revered.
dear sir,
i came to look at pictures of Dixmont hospital (long story) and found your website, i believe i have fallen for your photography! i have been here hours ... my rear is numb, and i believe my hounds are peeved because i am 2 hours past dinner.... i will return. Beautiful work!
Phenomenal to think many of these places were pitch black and you had to light what little you could, not even seeing all of it, and still making something so beautiful in each shot and out of someplace so sad. Better than the restof us can do in broad daylight , hot equipment and every advantage. Every advantage, that is, except your genius.
Stacy, I hope to have my Dixmont photos up soon but it will probably take some time to get to that set... they seem to finally be moving ahead with the demolition, I'll post an article on the main page by tomorrow.
These we're offshoots of the main tunnel and held those little ledges that one can see one the left hand side. I surmise that these places were the oldest part of the main bldg. complex and might have held patients. I also remember that just away from these funny little cretches that in the main tunnel that there semblances of nursing stations. Can anyone give me a take on this observation?
How ono earth did they light these places 150 years ago. As far as that goes, how did they light them at the time the hospital closed? I don't see any fixtures, ahem, soap dispensers, or conduit on the walls. This picture has me mesmerized, Motts, I kep wondering what it wold be like to be here 150 years ago. Beautiful composition. Thanks.
