How very eerie this ferry looks...not as happy as most imagine. I could imagine a cult gathering within it.
this one makes me feel as if i'm there.
I got from it the debacle of public transportation... at least the ferry got built, used, and discarded. 3 billion dollars later, Seattle still has no rail.
Well, hell! I used to live in Seattle and they talked endlessly about a rail. So, nothing yet? I also used to live in Salt Lake City and even THEY finally got a rail. Seattle could use it so much more. That's one of the reasons my spouse and I finally left that beautiful city - the traffic was a true nightmare. :-(
Makes me wonder. Is this an old Staten Island Ferry, and if so, is it one I might have been on as a kid 60 years ago ?
Makes me think of an amusement park for some reason - a pavillion.
tell me about it lynne, I live in Bothell, but i work at
Overlake hospital in Bellevue. Talk about nightmare *shudders*
It has a great sense of depth that pulls you into the photo, although I wouldn't fancy my chances walking down there !!!
It's probably the first American Legion. I remember when it was towed there when I was a kid.
It's not an SI ferry. Her name begins with "SEA" and there's never been a boat starting with those letters in the SI Ferry fleet.
Where's the nameplate? I've never seen it.
This is all that remains of the old Erie-Lackawanna RR ferryboat "LACKAWANNA". Originally built as the HAMBURG in 1891, she was renamed CHATHAM during the World War One. In 1949, she was dieselized and renamed LACKAWANNA. Her diesel engine gave off a high-pitched whining noise (I recall this growing up in the 60s) and was nicknamed "WHINING WILLIE" by the commuters riding her. She was one of the last active boats in the E-L fleet when all ferry service between Hoboken and Barclay St. was shut down in November of 1967. She also was the only Lackawanna boat to have radar installed on an experimental basis. As recently as the 1980s, this once-beautiful old ferry was still basically intact, albiet decaying and weatherbeaten.
tha ship is cool but i expected guns!
the insulance of some people. why did you expect guns? i mean really
Really, really great pictures!
I think this is the 1921 ferry BEACON?
The whining sound of her diesels was caused by very big turbo chargers.
it is to bad it sank. it looks like it used to be a nice boat. I would like to go on it myself because it looks really cool.
Okay Im really sorry I cant go further than this

I'm sorry, I really tried
How could you not think of anything to say about this picture. I could think of alot of things to say about this picture. A picture is worth a thousand words I say.
I think the picture is really cool. The deck still looks safe enought to walk on.
