IT WOULD BE SUCH A TREAT TO GET ABOARD ONE OF THESE THINGS!
With the condition they are in I'm not sure getting aboard one would be a very good move.
This entire series is incredibly HAUNTING. The Sargosso Sea of Mythologhy (maybe) ain't got nuthing on this convention. Why is all this still there....and why does it even exist? Hey.....what does this cost us as taxpayers?
And with the high price of steel these days, why aren't these ships sold for scrap? Some of them look like they have been there for decades.
It breaks my heart to see these beautiful old beasts just rotting away.
Its true that these beautiful ships are now jsut rusting away.. kinda reminds me of Dr. Ballard's book LOST LINERS. I'm wondering about the history behind all of thse ships. It probabily isn't costing the taxpayers anything, but i wish one of thse could be restored and diplaied as a museum at the sight itself, shoinw the life and death of a ship.
i think this is sad because in 20 years or sooner there gonna be like hey where are all those ships and realize there to old and distroyed to restore i mean it would be awesome to go see them in a museum.
tell ya the truth many of these ships were meant to serve as reserves or extra parts. Ever since WWII the US has been savin decomishoned naval and civilian boats here just incase we need em.
I think this stuff is outside of a scrap metal place on arthur Kill Rd. ?Witte marine. My friend and I snuck in there once and went on a half sunken ship. It was scary as hell. I remember walking into a room with wooden floors and looking toward the bow as the floor sunk into the depths. It was indoors yet in the sea at the same time. Very spooky.
You just want to get on one? Some of those would be good for an unusual home. Nothing like being a little different from the masses.
Yeah zeezyx, a real des-res if you fancy living surrounded by stinking, sludgy water in one of the most polluted places on earth! And I really wouldn't relish the prospect of spending a night surrounded by these dead, decaying hulks looming out of the darkness at every turn! The sounds would scare me silly... the gurgling and groaning as the advancing tide slowly fills the lower decks with water for the thousandth time, the creaking of rotted hulls, cabin doors banging in the wind. Freakier than any haunted house...

That said, there are rumours that a lone hermit lives (or lived) on the Duke of Lancaster, the remains of a beached liner on the Welsh coast. That is what you might call 'extreme squatting'...
nice, very nice
An artist I knew died after falling through the floor of an old abaondoned railroad engine repair facility. His brother held him for the last five minutes of his life - there was no time for an ambulance. Be careful in old structures.

That said, people have died for things less worthy than art.
rich-edwards79, are you the long departed soul and departed former frontsman of "The Manic Street Preachers"?
Yeah.

(should've known that faking my own death would only work for so long....)

;o)
rich, do you need a place in which to hide?

That was me back in the day. But now I live on a nice boat of my own. Who says the homeless are hopeless ? ;~)
Hey, I'd take the 'Duke' anyday - she's beautiful. And UK law dictates that any squatted structure is automatically yours after 10 years :-)
nice and quit right
You cant cut these boats up, they are fish habitats and protected by the US Govt. That is a fact.
The duke is privately owned and still used a weekend market and as a wharehouse.
Why would these boats be protected by the US gov.; tell me that?
I think its a trawler or a small frighter
Seeing these reminds me of when I was a kid. These hulks still thrill me and what a blast it would be to explore them.
Its sad to see these great ships in this grave yard of iron. A haunting of by gone memories...
What an amazing website, and some amazing links!!! I cannot believe i have never heard of any of these places.
what happend here???
Looks like the boat rusted so bad that it sank where it is siting.
The boat still looks safe enough to explore. If I could explore the boat I would because I wounder what the inside of the boat looks like.
I bet that there are still some rooms inside the boat that are not flooded. I also bet the bridge is safe enough to explore. I wounder what the inside of the bridge looks like.
That is so freaking amazing!!!

xxkatxx
For every one that thinlks that its a shame that these boats have been left here, then just imagine if they had all been scrapped and turned into soda cans,. Then we'd have nothing to talk and wonder about... think about it
FB JIM- pls.contact me about some un-identified hulks.
wonder why its tethered up... its not going anywhere... haha
See, this is what I'm talking about. For some reason this picture scares the crap out of me! I mean it's a great shot and all but damn. Strange phobia I have....
