another picture that words cannot describe
my mother worked as a nurse in a center very similar to this and she would come home some nights with tear-filled eyes as another child she had grown fond of and worked closely with had passed away. a very harsh and tragic reality of the sometimes short lifespan the disfigured and severely handicapped, a loving staff was their only savior but all too often the ones who worked the longest and rose in the ranks were the heartless and cruel.
But thank God for people like your mother who took care of these folks. Always underappreciated, frequently underpaid, often slandered by outsiders, often pushed around by the more dominant and less caring staff, but working for their charges selflessly because it wasn't about the money - it was about the people they took care of. She earned the love and respect of her charges and could look at herself in the mirror at the end of the day. She is someone we can all definitely look up to. :-)
Here, Here!
Yep yaggy, hats off to your mother. This stuff still happens, not only to the mentally disabled but to our parents, or other loved one in nursing homes/retirement homes ........
amazing
You only chilled them, so it's a big fridge!

Temps range from 0 to +10 'C normally, inside one of these.
Motts, I need your expertise:
Was there a "viewing" area to the morgue? I see three freezer doors (from the ground up) and a glass door at the top. What does this glass door seem to be for? Is it just another door that for some reason has glass?
Actually the top door was removed; it looked just like the others but it was used as an access point to service the refrigeration units up top.

As far as a viewing area, I would guess you are speaking of autopsy theaters... they were far and few between in psychiatric hospitals, I have only seen one in Byberry State, and another in a non-psychiatric facility. They were used so medical students and colleagues could safely observe autopsies being performed in a large group, as opposed to being in a cramped morgue like this one.
I'd never be able to work at a hospital or, heck, even a vet's offiice. To give care from the heart would require getting close on a personal level, and to one day hear that one has died would really be tough.
Thanks for the story, yaggy.
'How shall the burial rite be read? The solemn song be sung! The requiem for the loveliest dead, that ever died so young?"
Yaggy, I understand your mother's pain. I lost two, one of whom I was extremely close to. And she was too young to be taken so soon.
"Her friends are gazing on her,
And on her gaudy bier,
And weep ! Oh! to dishonor
Dead beauty with a tear! "

Poor old Lenore. 8`-(
That is so sad
Omg, that is so sad. and the really sad thing is that that is true.
did not need to know that. we knowwhat thats all about.
very very sad and disturbing
My neice is a registered nurse in South Carolia. She always wanted to be a nurse since she was little. She told me once if she told me what she got paid, I wouldn't believe her. She now teaches nursing and works at the hospital part-time.
did they kill kids there or somthing???
No, the residents usually died of natural causes.
that DISGUSTING!!!!
The loss of innocence.
May their sweet souls be bathed in God's light.
Maybe it's just me but the idea of autopsy theaters are kinda sick. I've seen plenty of dead bodies due to the fact my dad does a lot with law enforcement and medical examiners and stuff. Forgive the spelling errors I can't seem to spell tonight,
People need to remember, it wasn't only disabilities or abuse that caused death, there was also TB, polio, german measels, measels, etc. most of this diseases have been all but eradicated in our country now, but were very prevalent back then. Some disabled folks also have natrally lower immune system responses too.
That's so sad Yaggy. My mother used to work with mentally disabled children in the Special Education class at the school she worked at. She came home one day crying; the child she had grown very fond of passed away the night before.
thanks, Motts, it's really good that you reminded us :)
I keep seeing the morgue fridges with spaces all the way to the ceiling ... how did they get the bodies in the top spaces?
Most top drawers are actually compartments solely used to access the refrigeration system for maintenance and repair (such as this one, I believe). Some larger cooling units have high slabs that were used to store smaller specimens (fetuses, body parts, etc). There are also special gurneys with an accordion-like lift that adjusts to the varying heights of morgue drawers.
Thats right keep out , TOXIC BLACK MOLD AND ASPESTOS YUM !! !! Not to mention DEMON CURSED SOULS isol8 spooky souls
that comment.. once again.. made me bawl like a baby.... have a very soft spot for babies. If it wasnt for a defect i would have a big brother....
