Bowling Alley

Bowling Alley

I was surprised at finding a two lane bowling alley, especially underneath the kitchen!

totally strange, god i wish i could go there!!
I've noticed that you can find bowling alleys, or at least one or two lanes, in the strangest places...
Looking at other facility pictures/websites and going by the history of these hospitals, bowling seems to be common...I haven't seen much other recreational areas . Maybe being under the kichen it was just for staff?
...just thought of it... in the early 1900s bowling was hip. Private summer cottages (big' uns, mind you)-think Newport, RI., had them too.
Totally out of place. I can't picture a bowling alley in a place like this!!
Must've been fun. Why, you could call up to the kitchen and get some fries nice and hot and they'd still be tasty by the time they got down there.
Well, I'm not so sure I'd want to eat anything from there now. Not to mention that even an 8-pounder would crash through that floor now.
What's with how freaking dark this terrible place is! There is no decent natural light. What windows there are are so damned small.
Twug: Bowling alleys were usually bellow ground, put in lower level "rec" rooms, thus low or no natural light.
Go to RI and check out the "Mansions" or CT , in wealthy residential homes. You'll find a bowling alley someplace in one of them. Or, even...find a place in your own town/city. Surely there are a few : )
It wasn't a terrrible place when built. Just a place to have fun or a distraction for people-nothing sinister.
Quest, i've been to most of the mansions in Newports, and none have a bowling alley in them. That's just odd.
The bowling alley reminds me of the movie 'Girl Interrupted.'
i cant belive a bowling alley is in a placelike this
omg, this totally reminds me of the movie "Girl, Interrupted" Wow, maybe they really did have these. The psyvh ward I went to didnt have one - thats not fair
wow they actually had a bowling alley?! go figure, entertainment for the patients?! yes i am being sarcastic.
Do you think the patients didn't deserve it or are you surprised the hospital was thoughtful enough to provide recreational opportunities? I am not sure which one you mean.
I agree with quest. I'm pretty sure it was mainly for the employees.
yeah. It's where they chained up all the nurses and doctors in the day... only to come out at night! is that a radiator under the window?
Wow that thing must be ancient! No automatic ball return / pinsetter. Must have been some task rolling your balls down the lane then having to go all the way back to retrieve the ball and reset the pins on your own. :P
that is def an odd thing to find in a place like that
Is it not a little weird that that have concrete toilets and no tp holders to deter weapons and SI but they'll hand an 8lb. rock (weapon) to to a patient?
wow
You can almost hear the characteristic "pop" of a thumb when a bowling ball is released here...oh my imagination is wandering
Actually, it's not that out of place. Maybe the staff just needed a place to cool down and relax. Its somewhat a lounge for them. They can go bowl when they need a break.
Lynne replying to you from forever ago, i meant that I'm suprised they had them for patients entertainment, not that they didn't deserve it. Was it for patient use, or staff?
it's sad to think that while their was kids and adults in cribs crying upstairs, that the workers were having a blast playing a game of bowling downstairs! nice!!
i'm just curious why they had bowling alleys in these hospitals, i can't image them letting the patients play. but then again i could be wrong.
why would that be there?!
Uh, I believe there are/were bowling alleys in some of the other institutional galleries and nobody really says much.
omg seriously? Motts.. do you go to these places all by urself?! =O
I believe they were good recreation and some of them were used for therapy and excercise. Think about it. Lifting the ball (some of them weigh alot), the accuracy it takes to hit the pins. It would be awesome therapy for the elderly. I have worked in nursing homes and some of these people are horribly mistreated by staff who don't care. I know alot of the people I took care of would love this. I took care of one man who was one of Hitler's SS officers.
kinda looks like the one at paul dever
