Fluoroscope

Fluoroscope

Moving on to the older buildings, this one room had all sorts of neat stuff crammed into it. This old fluoroscope was really neat - the person would stand between this screen and the x-ray machine, and the radiation would pass through the body and cast shadows onto the screen, where the doctors could observe the movement of internal organs and bones rather than looking at a still photo.

oh my gosh, thats awsome motts!! ive never seen one of those before, but i have heard of them.
what a difference b/w ours and that times.
Handy for diagnosing TB and other lung disorder I understand.
and handy for getting a high dosage of radiation .. oh and think of the person looking at the screen. I beleive this device dates from the time you could buy a 'do it yourself' home radiation kit ...
how do you find all this shit out, Motts?

Of course I needed to know it was a fluoroscope in the first place!
Anybody know of a museum out there that would want something like this? It's a shame to let something this unique to rot away.
I think I could have some fun with that...LOL
Canada,
In my state (Minnesota) there is a museum dedicated to old medical history.
I don't know the name of it, but you can look it up if you like.

Intense shot.
thats what i'm talking about the old stuff!!!!
That is pretty interesting equipment though too bad this isn't in its original location. We are looking at the part that the doctor would be facing and the patient would be behind the screen. The dose is actually pretty low on this type of system however so is the diagnostic value. This would be situated in a completely dark room and the radiologist would have spend time in this room to get acclimated to the dark. The patient would step onto the location and a faint image would appear. These were very dim. somewhere in the range of 1/1000 the light intensity of normal work environments. Since the 1950's Flouro systems have used a device called an image intensifier which amplifies the light and allows it to be displayed in most enviroments. More recently there have been solid state detectors introduced that replace the intensifier altogther.
Thank you for the info. Matthew, its always a pleasure to read how the old equipment was used!
Scary yet cool.
I didn't think that these things existed anywhere outside of cartoons, how interesting!
lol, thought it was a treadmill....
