Know Thyself

Know Thyself

The secure building looked a little tough to get into until we reached the front, where it looked like the whole entrance had been removed. The ceiling was stained black from a fire started some time ago.

The phrase "Know Thyself" was above the entrance, which seemed very odd.

That is an odd greeting for a building to proclaim, ya think? Even the way it's written is odd.
Great location Motts!
I agree it is an odd statement to have on this entrance... For a Hospital / Institution that held Psychiatric Patients to have this "Motto" on its Archway seems kind of out of place, I wonder exactly what the point was ?
Motts, you keep goin dont ya? Again I know you must be candid, thin one in PA? Yes or no please
The point is, if you know your own mind you can control and analyse it.

A lot of Psychiatric principles are to do with discovering yourself and dealing with any issues that may be disturbing you.

While it appears very old worldy in composition, the phrase 'know yourself' just sounds wrong! :)
there is a meaning to know thyself
Yes, Skye, I think the whole point was to perhaps shine "hope" on patients....
It was more like know your self
"know thyself" seems a disturbing phrase to have there - I could think of many others which would've been more appropriate. Hmmm....strange...
WOW! The photo is amazing. At first site: Know Thyself and it leads into a dark closed off room. The room had a door at one time. Spooky! The wording is used in spritual readings and is an old saying. To "Know Thyself" is to have insight to ones mind therefore you can change it or change yourself to become a better person. To overcome thier illiness. The picture is just amazing. Makes me wonder.
I have a sign in my office that says know thyself it was given to me when I was going through some rough times ..
I don't care what people say. I strongly think that there is more than one meaning to that "know thyself" in this particular location. Mabey some kind of double meaning is hidden there.

I agree it disturbes me.
"know thyself" was inscripted about the entrance to the oracle at delphi. the oracle at delphi was where ancient greeks went to get their futures told. there was a priestess that could supposedly communicate with the gods, and by doing so she could reveals one's future.

it was in greek at the oracle, but the greek is translated to "know thyself"
Caitlin,

I was wondering where I knew that from, thanks! :0)
"Know Thyself" was a phrase conjured by the greek philosopher Socrates as a tool in his primitive teaching of pre-modern psychology.
"and to know thyself
is to destroy all beliefs
and be someone else"
Haiku's are fun to write.
=)
NONETHELESS ASK THYSELF FOR ANOTHER KINGDOM FOR THAT WHICH I LEAVE IS TO SMALL FOR THEE.
EVERYONE, FOR A SCHOOL PROJECT I NEED TO KNOW EXACTLY WHERE THIS PLACE IS!!! STATE, CITY ANYTHING. THANKX.
It's in the United States.
Kime.....Kime....Kime.....Would you also like to know how to break in?
Peaches, I am positive that knowing how to break in is also somehow part of the class assignment. 8`-)
based on the history as it is told here this is just the type of thing i feel went on in all the hospitals... i mean think of it ... you mean to tell me every nurse that worked in any of these hospitals at the time treated their patients well? i hardly think so even to this day abuse isnt a far fetched thing to occure... and the very fact that this happend to children.. is pure evil.. i wouldnt doubt the souls of these poor babys still can be heard screaming for help in the middle of the night by people .... any input or comments email me at justicedreams24@aol.com
- Really you don't want my comments. Honestly, I don't think you could handle them. Besides, you would likely find them abusive.
Which scares me, because your fascination with abuse would likely feed this sick fantasy you have.

*clink clink* That's my 2 cents.
Agreed, Lyric...there is a very strange fascination with the idea of abuse from this spidergirl... I leave for a lil bit to keep up with college and I come back to this...humm..."Ooo, really makes you wonder."
Can some1 plz tell me about the meaning of "know thyself" because i have to do it for hw at school and i seriously dont get wat it means. thx
It should read "Abandon all hope all ye who enter here"
Yeah, Dante and Socrate :)

Btw... the 'Know Thyself' thing comes from Delphi Sanctuary, and was well knowed all around ancient greek world; Socrate just repeat it...
Fallow the white rabit Neo
well i guess its better then a door mat great picture anyways
What's more disturbing then what it says is how it is painted.
This place was once so beautiful and in many ways it still is. The children here needed to feel loved and safe. The staff gave them that.
Where the hell is this place? I cant find the exact location for the life of me
makes perfect sense, seeing as it is what psychology is all about.
it was grafitti.
i know lots of people with stupid grafitti monikers.
know thyself.. makes sense for a mental hospital
know thyself means to know who you areand what is your purpose in your life and this beautiful earth
deep meaning
something very Buffy about this pic. i can just picture Caleb saying this!
It looks like the gateway to Hell. I couldnt imagine a child walking through those doors...
I agree w/ "I think", it is grafitti. It does not fit the style of the architecture at all.
