I just LOVE all of these pictures!!!
What are autoclaves? they look technical and nerving.
Autoclaves are used to sterilize medical (metal) equipment.
Autoclaves are like high-pressure ovens. They heat up to extremely high temperatures, and very high pressures. I've seen them used in manufacturing to "bake" carbon composite/resin molds into harder-than-steel components. I can't imagine what they would be used in a hospital for.
(12:48PM) Boston Steve--They are used to sterilize equipment....There are several other pictures of autoclaves of various sizes at other institutions here...surf around, you'll find them!
I cant believe they left those there. Do you know how expensive those are? I am trying to get into tattooing and I do not have an auto clave yet as I can not afford one. And they just le..... hey were is this again? ;-)
i'm surprised they weren't auctioned off. it's amazing, the condition of them is unbelievable! another great photo mr. motts!!!!
Autoclaves are also used (and in most countries required by law) by proffesional piercers. Both the instruments and "jewlery" have to go through their treatment before being used on a person and the machine itself has to be checked monthly at a hospital to ensure it's function and lack of bacteria.

(Amazing photos, btw!)

Ladies and gentleman.. Someone who knows that autoclaves weren't made for cooking people!!
I hate autoclaves. My boyfriend works at a veterinary clinic and he took the liberty of showing me the surgery room, which is also where they keep the autoclave (definitely not as big as these; the vet's autoclave looks like it could be portable). It really creeped me out for some reason.

I have a weak stomach anyway, so thinking about surgical instruments doesn't exactly sit well with me, but the sight of the autoclave really kind of did it for me. And they have such a distinct, sterile, almost suffocating smell to them, even when they aren't in use. *shudders*
If you've touched what i've touched, we wouldn't be holding hands, babe
in my college microbiology class we baked a turkey in about 45 min and ate it at the end of class...it was great... yum... ;) it is like a giant pressure cooker as well as a sterilizer for equipment
we baked the turkey in the autoclave I forgot to say.. sorry
They look brand new almost.
medical grade plastics can withstand the high heat and pressure of autoclaving as well.
Oh, Oh, I know what an autoclave is. I just learned a few minutes ago from another picture! This site is interesting and educational =)
They're for sterilization of surgical trays. They looks pretty much the same as the ones I use in the hospitals I've worked in for years. You would wrap a tray of equiptment in special paper with striped tape and put it in the autoclave and when they instruments inside have been fully cleaned the stripes on the tape turns black. It's interesting how they haven't changed much.
It looks like a big vault that you keep something priceless like money
