Tools of the Trade

Tools of the Trade

The morgue was just full of stuff... heavy duty scalpels and knives, jars of various liquids, and most interesting, an old skull clamp. Each tip had a pointed end to it to dig into the skull; the mortician (or diener) squeezed the handle so the end closed, then tightened to the desired pressure using the wheel adjuster.

The autopsy table is what this is all sitting on; the curved recess in the lower right is interesting, I wonder if instruments or organs were temporarily placed in here.

This whole place has sort of a made scientist feel to it for some reason.
you set it up like this?
interesting that the place is just about empty but the morticians equipment is still in the morgue... just gives me the creeps.....
anyone want butter on their toast??
This stuff was left like this??
All this stuff was tucked away in drawers and dark corners, just laid it out on the autopsy table for a shot.
Wow! What a neat collection, what a find!
Motts, I must admit, your morgue shots have t o be my favourites, and especially when you can dig up the tools, and set them out like you did. It's just amazing and morbid at the same time.
The jar with liquid in it is just too gross (it nauseates me, I'm having problems keeping dinner down here)...apart from it, it's a morbidly amazing shot.
have you ever gotten in any leagal trouble or caught moving these things around?? most likely not . I've moved things around in a certain home wher a murder occurred and had no gloves. you do use gloves and masks right motts??
You can't get in legal trouble by moving things around... unless you "move" them to your house

I wear an asbestos mask with P100 rated HEPA filters when I think it's called for, and gloves for the really nasty climbing. Morgues are pretty clean though, it's standard procedure to keep them so.
Whats in the jar? looks like some kind of weird liquid.
Oooooh, very cool shot! Love the "skull clamp!" (Learn something new here!)

Hope you scrubbed your hands, nonetheless, anyways! ;o)
Dude the skull clamp thing is weird, and how do they just LEAVE stuff in jars like that?? You would think that they would clean everything out huh...
anyone want some lemonade?
Motts, got a question for ya. have you ever been caught / chased by the police / security while trying to get photos from these abondoned places? many are dangerous or have some sort of unknown secrets behind there walls, and are therefore patrolled and is illeagel to enter, as it is considered tresspassing.
To be honest, I probably would have taken that skull clamp... you know.. for the museum, ;-) lol
actually, im NOT a clepto, but... I wouldn't be able to resist .... I don't know how you do Motts!!
Silk, I know what you mean. Right now I am going all over campus of the place where I work, looking for old books, pix, and miscellaneous items for our 100-year anniversary coming up. We are actually going to set up a museum on grounds, so I don't get the old "itchy fingers" when I see great stuff because I get to collect it now and help decide how we are going to use it in the museum.

But if I were somewhere other than here and found some marvelous items like these that had been left behind, it would be REAL tempting. Luckily for me, the threat of getting caught and going to jail for an old skull clamp is enough to stop the itch when it occurs, because if anyone is EVER going to get caught, it's me. ;-)
I am more so interested in what is in the tin.
At one of our older hospitals here in my city, we have a special hallway that has glass cases all the way down the hall filled with medical items from the hospital's history. I believe it is named "history hall". I like to go there and read the info and look at the stuff for hours.
I think the ickiest thing is that there's still goo on the instruments........ O.o
people sure did take their dead bodies seriously back then...
They still do! Ever try walking into a morgue and asking to take a body out on loan? :D
Thats insane!
I want to go there so bad!
i'd love to know what those liquids are... im sooooooooooooooo nosey :->
What's the goop and juicey swill in the jars? Well, open them and drink some of course! That should provide some kind of clue, no?
What did the label say on the jar of liquid?
"Drink me"?
I'm not sure, the "label" was a worn away piece of masking tape... it could've been soap, that rings a bell for some reason.
Hmm soap in a jar? How many jars were there approx?
you touch all this shit without gloves??
AND ate pizza with our hands afterwards!
I always told y'all Motts was an animal. ;-)
looks sort of like Motts reflection on the left knife.
I love this photo - any chance of getting a larger version (say, 1280x854 (powerbook LCD size))?
The morgue...everybody's dyin' to get in!
Ohhhhhhh! I know, I know!!!! Terrible! LOL!!!! ;P
http://threeleaps.com/...s/inventory/m765.htm <- see that link! I've found some photos of almost the same skull clamp :)

These knifes are funny. They look more like kitchen stuff then hospital ones
LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE GETTING READY TO HAVE SOME FUN WITH THESE TOOLS.
That little dip in the table looks to be in about the right spot to hold the intestines as they were being pulled out. <<BLEGH>> :P
Always with the jars of banana pudding!
EEWW Motts u touched it? Sorry i still love you tho buddi!
lol, i was in an old abandoned high school and did take this old hall pass ... but of course everything but the gymnasium (that was still used for local kids) was to be torn down soon. there was also a HUGE blood stain on the floor ... very creepy.

ps. the goo is icky.
daniel, bet whats in those jars smell like your mayonaise project!
I admit the temptation to take something is pretty huge when you're actually standing there all alone. We did an exploration of an abandoned Cold War base and some of the fixtures in the buildings were just SO cool. Did not take anything though, stuck to the code.
This is creepy. I would never have touched any of this stuff without gloves, after knowing where it's been.....
What's the packet on top of the chrome jar? A small booklet on human anatomy?
OKOK...I KNOW WHAT THAT GOO IS~!!

Wait for it...

IT IS SOAP FOR THE...

SOAP DISPENSER!! *Tah-daaaahhhhh*

*Slinks off-stage to a hail of rotten tomotoes*
Thanks for the chuckle. I am extremely late to these photos and seeing the inside jokes makes me feel at home!
No problem Mari! Make sure you check out the newer gallaries posted not too long ago! LOTS of neat pics there too, and inside jokes! :)

See ya there!
I have a couple of friends that work for the coroners office and the head coroner used to have a specialized kitchen set as the knife blades are longer, the hilts are better, and the blades are less likely to bind and slip than a scaplel, also there is no intention to put this person back together in the same fashion as a medical doctor in a hospital so it is not uncommon to see knives of this nature in morgues.
do not want.... to be cut open with those that is... to have as collectable? yes do want XD
