Damn...I keep going back to this picture because it just unnerves me (must be too many sci-fi flicks)

I can see this as a mass murdere comes up behind someone, grabs 'em and starting up this machine large evil foul crunching sounds..throws the victim in between the rollers....slowly from the feet up......

ACK!!!!!!
I memory serves ne, this machine is where you would put a piece of wet laundry into - and when it rolled out the other end, it would not only be dry, but ironed too. the only problem was that you had to make sure it was totall straight when you put it in or you'd end up with a creased mess...
what a vivid imagination!
These things are known for crushing and ripping off limbs. They are extremely powerful and I have been both fascinated and terrified of them since I read Stephen King's "The Mangler" when I was youth.
We have some more modern versions of a mangler in our basement ( I live in a thirteen-storied high building with 8 flats on each level) and I have actually never seen anyone use them.... And I've lived here for 24 years now...

My mum taught me how to use them when I was very young so to keep my fingers still attached and all, but still to this day I get an eerie feeling from just walking past the rooms containing the machines.

=) Often feel quite silly for it. After all - they're used for laundry....... hehe

That thing looks *evil*, haha.
wonder if it still works?
Sure Redz, just take your ticket, you can wait in the outtermost wing. They'll like you there =)
are you sure you put wet sheets into this machine? Wouldn't you just wash and dry and then this machine ironed them?
The Mangler...
it looks like the top of an aircraft carrier!
When I worked at a resort, we actually used Mangle brand ironers. Didn't look quite like this, but the same premise. And yes, you put the laundry in wet and it comes out dry. If it's NOT dry, you slow the machine down until it is.
Almost all British mental hospitals had on-site laundries, urbex has a few good pictures of old equipment like this.
my company manufacturers parts for these machines
Amazing, ironing sheets....
Employee injury nightmare!
as a few other people mentioned, all I can think of seeing pictures of this thing is The Mangler.
Yup---see my comment on the pervious pic...

This is similar to the one I worked on!]

*Shudders* I used to HATE being on the Mangler...I would rather pull the dirty linen as it came in than work this machine. :(
that is a weird ironer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
