Columns, beautiful ceiling lights, and niches for the window bays gave this room some character.

Looks like where the patients would look out the window, all depressed and everthing.

oh THAT disclamer
was it guarded just like the byberry hospital
No, the guards here are an armed division of the police department with the power of arrest, not a private security company.
Beautiful room! It's a shame everything's laying around and rotting.
I agree. I just love the windows! If the room was in proper order it would look lovely. I'd like to find a house like that and fix it up. Not live in it, just clean it. Houses like that are too creepy for me to want to live in.
Even still Motts, you are a brave man to venture!
The windows would actually help relive depression, sun light increases seritonin in the brain, the lack of which causes clinical depression.

Is this building an example of the Kirkbride Plan?
No, it was a large building built in the Kirkbride era, but was not laid out in such a fashion.
motts i'm new to this site and think its great whats the best place u've been to?
I like this picture. It almost looks like that one picture in the Danver State Asylum biography, where the lady is sitting in the chair. Creepy. Do you think that all the asylums from around the world come together to design the next one? Because the would explain the green, pink and blue colors in all the hospitals and asylums. Eh? Ever think about that? How do you sleep at night knowing this may be going on!? Grr. My head hurts.
Reminds me of when my grandad had a stroke. His ward looked exactly like this *shivers*
The pole in the middle looks as if it cutting the picture in half, therefor making the sides on either side of the pole look symmetrical.
Beautiful lamps, too. Looked good when it was in shape. Fine picture!
