Tracks

Tracks

The tracks on the ceiling were interesting, I'm guessing they were guards for the trolleys, preventing them from derailing when they passed these curves.

A homeless person seemed to be drying out his/her clothes nearby.

OK, this is some sort of science fiction scene - "destruction of the galaxy" or something.
These look like a way of the trolley's overhead electrical contro arml being able to make the smooth curve without pulling on or losing connection with overhead wires that were more commonly used for trolley service.
Those structures exist so that if the trolley pole jumps the wire, it'll fall into those structures, rather than bang into the roof. If the trolley pole were to fall against the wire and hit the roof, this would keep the current from shorting out on anything grounded in the ceiling.

Motts may not be a "choo choo" guy, but I am. :-)
AWESOME pic! I want to see this place!
The tracks in the ceiling were guides so the trolley wheel at the end of the ole would stay on the overhead wire. This was very comon on tight turns. You would only find tis construction under ground. When these cars ran on the streets they used a different style of guile
They must have had Surface Cars under here-trolley cars that would also run underground.
I am glad to note that Phila. has resurected some of its' trolley car system.
We also have protective planks between the wires and the bottom of the 'EL' (Market/Frankfort elevated train) for when the cities "trackless trollies" used to run under the El.
This reminds me of the Momorail and the former PeopleMover at Disneyland.
No pictures of the small house like building thats down there?
