Fireplace

Fireplace

Interesting brickwork decorates this old fireplace, which helped warm up these large and drafty dayrooms.

This fireplace is actually quite inviting. It seems out of place for a Mental Asylum.
I was thinking the same thing - the brickwork & scrolling on the mantel makes it look like it belongs in someone's living room...
beautiful fireplace.............creepy place
I think the reason that such a beutyfull fireplace is there is because it would make the patients feel like that they were at home. It would proply com them some what.
Being a second generation mason i have to say that is a piece of art, notice that the inside of the firebox is done the same as the face, you won't see that in modern construction.
I'm not from a masonry family, but you're right, Psyc. They really don't make things like this anymore. Nobody wants to pay for the hand-crafted stuff that'll last a hundred lifetimes when they can go to Wal*Mart and get one that will last for a couple of years ... then buy a new one. It's a disposable society. Kind of sickening to the heart when you think about it.
I agree with silkster40z. Its really surprising to see this outside of the admin building.
I'm always amazed & in awe of these old fireplaces in institutions.
I really like that fireplace
I love the fireplace and the windows in the back room
I love the fireplace, but i wonder about the fireplace in the day room. Im thinking about resident safety. i like the calming effect, but wonder if it worked for everyone
Revisiting this gallery is fun.

I just noticed the lovely scrollwork on the mantelpiece!

This must be in a ward where they could trust the patients enough to let them enjoy the fireplace.
I LOVE LOVELOVE that fireplace....
I WANT IT!
Since they don't make them like that anymore, why do they let such architecture go down the tubes like that? It's a real shame.
Apparently almost everything is disposable if you wait long enough.
I think this place must've been pretty old to have had a fireplace as a means to heat a patient area.
The dayroom must have been well supervised. It wouldn't be smart to leave psychiatric patients alone around fire. No telling what harm they could do to themselves and/or others were they able to come into contact with it.
it surprized me to see a fireplace! It is beautiful tho...
beautiful!
Something big and gloomy about the rooms...(obviously, disuse makes any large, ornamented room seem that way) but that's great that the fireplace could be in a patient area and not just for the show of an upscale admin building.
*Gasp* That is gorgeous! Just look at that old brickwork. Wow.
On a good day, a kind nurse would get out the popcorn basket and a trusted patient would make popcorn for the others. Or s'mores.
Its a shame that alot of this stuff couldnt be saved and reused, i wish i could have the run of the place to take what i wanted.. great pictures and a great site..love the history of the places
.....IF walls can talk what a story we would have for this generation.
